A wonderful boutique hotel, filled with museum quality works of art and beautiful tropical gardens. On arrival, we were welcomed with a friendly smile and a chilled glass of cava and shown to our room. Everyone we met during our stay was gracious and clearly enjoyed working there. After our first night we mentioned to the manager that the air conditioning in our room was not working very well and within a matter of minutes they determined it needed repair and upgraded us to a beautiful suite for the rest of our stay! The included breakfast was very tasty with lots of options. We also ate dinner there one night and it was well presented and delicious. Each day of our stay, was nice to come back to this oasis for a dip in the pool and/or a drink at the bar. Our only regret is that we did not stay here longer, and we hope to do so in future. If you are going to go to La Palma, you should stay here. It was the highlight of our trip to the Canary Islands. Highly recommended!

After experiencing different islands and hotels.. this one is my final choice for every vacation. I personally dislike crauded hotels, Hacienda de Abajo is a private and silence experience. You are sorraunded by a beautiful tropical garden on which you just hear the birds, and indoors by pieces of art as in a palace. The service is very polite and the food very elaborated. For my wife a I its finally the place. The place to just arrive and relax.

A beauty surrounded by tragedy This hotel is a jewel forged from the ashes of a natural tragedy. On an island punished by a recent volcanic eruption it resembles the strength and hope of its people. The rebirth of joy and the good things in life. Here you can witness the bitter power of nature for destruction, as well as the wonders that make our lives enjoyable. Visiting the island of La Palma today is both impressive and humbeling, and you can do it while enjoying the other side of the coin, which are the riches of its art, gastronomy, and confords found inside the hotel. Any art enthusiast would find highly enjoyable the collection of porcelain from the "Compañia de Indias" from the XVIII century, the Flemish and Dutch collection of paintings from the XVII century, or the mirrors and French hangings from the XVIII century, all also in luded in every room. Which easily explains why there are not children allowed; which secures the calm and silent atmosphere to just enjoy your time by the pool, in the spa, and getting a massage. The food is also a much priced joy in this hotel. It's renowned famous chef has come up with its own unique mixture of the subtropical flavors from the island, with the exquisite plates of any famous restaurant. Things like Canarian beef tartare, foie grass, and scarlet tongue; coconut ginger galanga soup; Zucchini capaccio with goat cheese and tomato vinaigrette... this being just some of the starters. So a good time at any time without a doubt. Both La Palma and the Hotel Hacienda de Abajo will both impress you. In such way that you will wish to come back as soon as you return home.

“Just lovely, but choose your room carefully”

Our second visit, and we will definitely return, hopefully many times - God willing. To make sure this gets read by management I shall not repeat here all the well-deserved accolades about excellent service, amazing antiques, works of art, paintings, and gorgeous gardens. Yes, they're all true - it really is truly lovely here. So why only 4 stars? Well a few reasons - some more important and some very minor: 1) Some of the lower-priced rooms (e.g. ours on our first visit) are a bit dingy and have a scenic view of a wall! Prospective guests should choose their room carefully and if possible spend a bit more. Some rooms are very much nicer, and if one can afford the top suite (room 3) it is truly wonderful - it's really huge, beautifully (opulently) furnished, and is the only room with a lovely sea view from its private balcony. 2) There is no bar in the evenings. On our last visit here the bar was open in the evenings, but for some reason not now, and nobody can explain why?! So now you come back from a happy meal out, it's 9.30pm, and you just want to relax with a drink for an hour before bed. But no. No bar. No drinks service anywhere. And surprisingly the restaurant staff make it clear that you can't even go in there for a nightcap. So you have to go back out again up into town, or it's early to bed. This is a really big mistake by the management, and frankly inexcusable. Every night is spoiled by a total lack of anywhere to relax and enjoy an evening drink after dinner. Potential profit on bar sales lost, and disappointed guests. 3) There is no "Do Not Disturb" sign on the room doors. Every evening they send round a member of staff offering wrapped sweets ( yes very generous, but really? sweets?!? ). One evening I was in the shower, and another evening we were actually in bed! A knock on the door, I leapt out and struggled to get into some shorts by which time, unbelievably - not once but twice - our door had actually been opened before I had even got my shorts on properly!!! This is so wrong. Never in all my travels has this happened before - and not once but TWICE! A simple "Do Not Disturb" sign is pretty much normal practise in all hotels, and surely would save such potential embarrassment. 4) A coffee machine, nice tea cups, but no tea bags or kettle? Fortunately we remembered this from our last visit and packed our own kettle and tea bags! Yes I know this is primarily a hotel for German guests, but we Brits do like a cup of tea!! 5) The top suite (the best room in the hotel) is magnificent in many ways, but a plastic shower curtain? Not quite the luxury experience :-( 6) Car parking is a gamble. Apparently street parking here is illegal (although most seem to do it). They do have their own tiny car park around the corner but it's sometimes full, and it's dreadfully scruffy, with piles of rubbish. Surely it would take very little effort to tidy this up. Certainly it's not a good advertisement for a prestige hotel. So most negatives are relatively minor, and the very many good points at the Hacienda have been well aired and repeated in other reviews, and with good reason. It's a lovely, stately, sedate, luxurious and well-run hotel in the best and sunniest part of this beautiful island. The restaurant is also pretty good in an area with few decent options. So yes, highly recommended, but with those few caveats. We really do look forward to our next visit, and we wish you and your lovely island continued successful recovery from all your recent cruel misfortunes.
