“A fun stay ticked all the boxes except breakfast.”

We had a great stay the beds are ordinary, rooms are well set up . We decided to have breakfast in the bistro. The food was cold the eggs over cooked toast was rock hard and coffee not hot enough . Disappointed it’s not hard to cook breakfast.

This is a review for the pub. Typical Aussie pub. Okay food, okay drinks, okay atmosphere, okay service. Central location

The rooms are labelled as 'suites', named after famous people - local and otherwise. To call ours a suite was rather overstated. Because this is a historic hotel, much original room space is now occupied by ensuite bathrooms. Our room was very clean. The bed was very soft, the one chair had lost all the padding in the seat and was therefore uncomfortable. The location of our room was bad as it was very noisy. All night long, there was noise outside the window - an on again/off again fan-driven motor - perhaps from an air-con units from another unit - you couldn't see out of the window to check; and at 6.15am a huge motor started with a loud bang, and then roared its head off, ending any possibility of further slumber. Whatever you do, unless you are profoundly deaf, ask for a quiet room. The bathroom was well supplied with shampoo/soap etc, the towels with nice, the water hot. There is a small 'fridge stocked with drinks and snacks. There are wine glasses, water glasses and small cups with a good supply of tea/coffee/sugar. The hotel has a small lift up to the accommodation levels (2 and 3). Taking the stairs though shows you a really nice side of the hotel. You can appreciate the high ceilings, stained glass windows, the view of the balcony with tables and chairs on it. It gives you a sense of the grandness of this historic hotel which is sadly missing elsewhere. Reception staff were very good. We dined there too and later went out. A key is provided to the main door if you return after about 9pm. I'm not sure if that means there are no staff in the hotel during the night.

I requested a room on the hotel web site not near the elevator (due to possible noise) but received a phone call advising the only room available was near the elevator, so I took it. We enjoyed our stay here. There was good communication with the hotel after we booked. I requested a room on the hotel web site not near the elevator (due to possible noise) but received a phone call advising the only room available was near the elevator, so I took it. We experienced no noise from the elevator. Check in was quick and easy. Every staff member we met was friendly. Our room was clean and comfortable. We were on the second floor so occasionally heard walking around from the room above us, but it wasn’t constant. The hotel has a lot of 19th century charm. The lone elevator is about 1200 centimetres square but does the job. Dinner in the ground floor restaurant started with me ordering a Thai beef salad ($25) which was passable but we wouldn’t get it again. The rice noodles were undercooked. I ordered a bottle of Shiraz from the very nice lady behind the bar then saw her putting ice in an ice bucket and opening the wine fridge. I mentioned to her that Shiraz is a red wine and would not be in the fridge. She consulted a colleague and was shown where the Shiraz was on the rack of wine bottles used for serving by the glass. She was then shown where the full bottles were stored underneath. It’s obvious she wasn’t shown around much before she started working the bar. We planned to watch the Aussie Open tennis semifinals on the tv in our room but could not find the local free to air channel carrying the match. I called the front desk, which was closed, and was transferred to a bartender in one of the bars who suggested a couple of channel numbers to try, neither of which worked. He apologised. We had seen the tennis on the tv in the restaurant so we watched it down there. The next morning when ordering breakfast to take to our room I mentioned this to our server who apologised and said she would report the problem with our tv to management. I was the first customer for breakfast at around 7:30 AM and did not receive my order for 25-30 minutes. By the time I got it there were three other tables occupied, one by a family of three who ended up walking out after sitting and waiting for menus for fifteen minutes to no avail. Clearly another server was needed. The breakfast rolls and hash browns we had were very tasty, as was the latte. I asked for artificial sweetener for my latte but there was none - only sugar. I asked for tomato sauce for our hash browns but when I got to the room none had been included. The guest information book in the room advises that guests who don’t check out by the 10:00 AM check out time, unless a later check out is approved beforehand, will be charged an additional $50. We asked for a later check out and were allowed to stay until 11:00 AM. No worries. We will definitely stay here when in Bendigo again but a little fine tuning is in order. If we could rate with half points we’d rate at 3 1/2 out of 5.
