We stayed two nights on our journey on the Carretera Austral and were overwhelmed by the Mallin Colorado Ecolodge. It is located at the slope of a hill next to the Lago General Carrera right in the middle of the countryside above the Carretera Austral. It is a perfect location to drive to Rio Baker (and Confluenza) as well as the Western parts of the Patagonia NP. The beautiful wooden buildings - the main house and other houses with rooms are tastefully architected and provide a very comfortable "lodge" atmosphere. We had a room with a spectacular view onto the lake. There are very comfortable common rooms. The people from the lodge were both incredibly friendly and helpful in case of advice. What also has been outstanding has been the food, both at breakfast but particularly at dinner with a set menu. The price of US$50 per person appeared full at first glance, but with hindsight was more than justified by the incredible quality, flavour and creativity of the dishes. In addition a well curated list of Chilenian wines complements the very positive impression. For anyone traveling the Carretera Austral looking for a special place to stay we can only recommend the lodge.

“Super place, but a sting in the tail!”

This was a super place to stay - great location, super views, and quality accommodation. Staff were friendly and helpful. This was a super place to stay - great location, super views, and quality accommodation. Staff were friendly and helpful. The 'sting in the tail' was the cost of the evening meal - $60 (£50) each for three courses without drinks - which came as something of a shock. The problem for us, and for anyone else, is that the nearest place with a selection of eateries is about 1 hour 15 minutes drive away. Also, when paying for our meal, there is a 10% tip added - they ask if you want to pay this, but of course it puts you in an uncomfortable position if you refuse. However, despite this, we really liked the accommodation and location.

“Cosy and picturesque”

Cosy lodge. We weren’t self catering but only limited tea/ coffee making facilities. You need to remind yourself where you are…. Bathroom was very rustic and needed to check for slugs on the shower curtain! Wood fire was lit for evening with a plentiful amount of wood available. Needed to adjust … lisää

Cosy lodge. We weren’t self catering but only limited tea/ coffee making facilities. You need to remind yourself where you are…. Bathroom was very rustic and needed to check for slugs on the shower curtain! Wood fire was lit for evening with a plentiful amount of wood available. Needed to adjust the timer on the electric heater or the morning was very chilly. Food was good. Nothing fancy but perfectly acceptable. The walk to the lake was great and made even better when accompanied by Gary the staffie! Fishing at a nearby lake was enjoyable.
