“Highly recommended tour”

We didn't stay at Three Tree Hill, just went for a tour and lunch, but we wished we had done! It's very beautiful with spectacular views and the food we had was great. We didn't stay at Three Tree Hill, just went for a tour and lunch, but we wished we had done! It's very beautiful with spectacular views and the food we had was great. However, I wanted to write this review specifically about the tour that we had with Ruben, which was exceptionally good. His presentation style was clear and engaging. We walked away with a really good understanding and felt that he'd brought the battlefield alive for us. Highly recommended.

“One of the Family”

How can you not feel as though you are part of the family when you are greeted by one of the family cats on arrival and then his sister joins you for dinner! How can you not feel as though you are part of the family when you are greeted by one of the family cats on arrival and then his sister joins you for dinner! Gin & Tonic as they are known put us right at ease immediately. The setting for this lodge is so tranquil. Everywhere you look there is another wonderful view to take in. The family and staff (who feel as though they are family too) are just so friendly and welcoming and keen to ensure you make the most of your stay. Obviously most people come here in order to visit the site of the Battle of Spioenkop. We were guided by Ruben who was amazingly well-informed for such a young guide and so enthusiastic and willing to share his knowledge. He also guided my husband on a bike trip sharing more of the areas history as well as pointing out local wildlife on their travels. We had not thought of this as a location for game viewing but discovered you could see so much just from our room terrace or the sundowner location. There are wonderful walks from the lodge either guided or just with a map. The owners Simon and Cheryl were happy to make recommendations and to make suggestions. The room are just perfect. Clean, simple, comfortable and with exceptional views from your own terrace. And the food is amazing! As with all lodges throughout our trip they never stopped feeding us! Delicious breakfast, morning coffee at the battlefield, lunch, sundowners and then a beautiful dinner at the end of the day. Although I don't feel the need to revisit the battlefield I would most certainly want to return here in the future if driving from Jo'burg to Durban. A chance to rest, a chance to walk more routes, a chance to say hello to Gin & Tonic and the Three Tree Hill family.

A really nice spot to start a South Africa trip. Excellent food and friendly staff, well sign posted walking trails along the fences of a neighbour reserve. A really nice spot to start a South Africa trip. Excellent food and friendly staff, well sign posted walking trails along the fences of a neighbour reserve. High light is the tours and history talks about local colonial history, Spioen Kop, Ladysmith and others. The sundowners overlooking the Drakensberg mountains rounded out each day.
