“Perfect Spot to Stay in Winter”

“Memorable autumnal long weekend”

Walkersons lies in pure Richard Hannay territory – bit of a cliché but it really does feel like you’re in the highlands of Scotland. Walkersons lies in pure Richard Hannay territory – bit of a cliché but it really does feel like you’re in the highlands of Scotland. The hotel itself lies at the bottom of long and winding road and is suitably attired in all the accoutrements of the area – stone walls, cosy rooms with antique furniture and old portraits of long-dead local notables (and their pets). It’s a sprawling property with rooms spread out to ensure peace and privacy (although one of the guests thought it appropriate to play his/her loud music on Saturday afternoon (what’s with these idiotic people and their phones /speakers..). Our cottage was cosy, with a great fireplace that was lit every day – heated blankets as well so the night-time chill was kept at bay. Decent bathroom with a fantastic shower (no glass windows thankfully!) There’s a veranda outside for those early morning contemplations and gazing out at the stunning vista – quite unbelievable to see rail tracks carved into the side of a steep hill and a train slowly meandering through daily. The area is gorgeous in all its autumnal glory – not quite Maine in the fall but still some pretty impressive foliage. The property is networked by walking trials. They are quite extensive so there’s a new view every day – fabulous for walkers. The food – generally quite good, although a touch on the heavy side. Could do with a bit of 21st century updating but it probably suits the Trumpian tribe who haunt these places (and there are lots of them) – not sure why they still haven’t effed off to the US. Breakfast was awesome – I dream about the oats with cream and berries (there’s a whisky version available). Kippers! Not sure when I last saw that on a menu. Good kippers they were too. A memorable stay – will definitely visit again next autumn (hopefully those “refugees” would taken up the offer from that repugnant orange blob…)
