If you’re a fan of the programme Fawlty Towers then this place will appeal to you. If you’re a fan of the programme Fawlty Towers then this place will appeal to you. Awful in many respects, the rooms are from the 1980’s, the buffet dinner no more than average, and the breakfast dreadful (if you want bacon and eggs you’ll have to cook them yourself) Having said that this fabulous Edwardian hospital retains a lot of its original features (I was treated to a sneaky late night tour), the staff are lovely and the setting stunning. I’ve stayed at myriad non-descript hotels over the years but this one is special, it sticks in the memory. I found myself wandering around outside taking photos. If you’re not the type of person who has to have everything brand new and perfect then I would highly recommend. I will be back!

“A lot better”

We were here early last year, and didn't have a very nice experience, mainly because of the C.restrictions :-( This time things were quite a bit better, because of the summer, the place was quite busy, the room was fine, bed comfortable, other furniture a bit worse for wear but otherwise OK. We were here early last year, and didn't have a very nice experience, mainly because of the C.restrictions :-( This time things were quite a bit better, because of the summer, the place was quite busy, the room was fine, bed comfortable, other furniture a bit worse for wear but otherwise OK. Everything was clean, shower was good, but walls very thin and there was a lot of noise from the corridor. The breakfast and dinner buffets were quite extensive and good, but nothing really very special. The staff serving inside and on the terrace were brilliant. The hotel sits in a very nice area for walking and cycling, or touring around. So this time a much nicer experience :-)

Usually they ask you if you enjoyed your stay when you check out. Here they didn’t bother and couldn't care less………because they had a good idea of the answer I wonder? Usually they ask you if you enjoyed your stay when you check out. Here they didn’t bother and couldn't care less………because they had a good idea of the answer I wonder? Sure, the bad weather wasn’t their fault and to be expected this time of year. But - with corona measures - agreeing a certain arrangement re.breakfast and not passing it on to the relevant person, so getting breakfast turns into a very unpleasant situation, is not very helpful. With the result we skipped b/f the next day. The fact that they’d arrange take-away meals was known to us; even so, hauling your meal on a tray through the rain and eating it luke warm at best, or more likely cold is not our idea of fun. A stay in a hotel should be relaxing and a bit of a treat, but I’m afraid there was no chance of that here. There were hardly any guests, absolutely no atmosphere , staff difficult to find or contact and only the guy in the restaurant, Melvin if I remember correctly, was pleasant and really friendly. The room was fairly comfortable, but there were no extra's like f.i. coffee- and tea making facilities , which, under the circumstances, was the least they could have done. And the promised 'coffee-to-go' wasn't even offered :-) The area is really very nice and we will want to return, but there's bound to be more welcoming places than this one.
