Stayed on the first night of our minimoon we had a great welcome and were shown upstairs to our room where we discovered we had been upgraded to a very large, beautiful room at the front of the inn over the main bar area with views to the front and side (Purdey). There were excellent tea making facilities (including proper milk!), some homemade cookies, water, a great TV, great WiFi and a very large, comfortable bed. The bathroom was also huge with a large shower and a freestanding bath along with lovely Bramley toiletries. We went down for dinner and were offered a complimentary welcome drink and were shown to our table in the beautiful main bar area with real log fire. The menu was fantastic and we found it hard to choose but we shared a great trout starter, had the venison (perfectly cooked) and specials board pork mains and shared the chocolate mousse dessert - all were delicious and they were very happy to change a couple of menu items to suit. After a fantastic nights sleep we had breakfast which was another great selection and the Classic English and Eggs Royale we had were both perfect (along with some very nice apple juice). The inn was beautiful, the staff all so lovely and we wished we could have stayed longer!

In the past year or so, I've travelled from Sunderland several times to visit newly acquainted friends in Dorset, and fell in love with area. I always visit the King John for drinks or a meal during my brief stays to the area, the place was highly recommended. This was my first opportunity to stay as a hotel guest. The welcome I always receive is warm and courteous, and the service very professional. The staff take an interest in their guests without being intrusive in conversations. The selection of food and drinks is outstanding, with staff happy to give advice. The atmosphere in the restaurant area is helped by the cosy log fire, decor and finely balanced non intrusive background music. I must compliment all the staff for the way everything is spotlessly clean - glasses sparkle in the candlelight for example, very romantic. The quality of your food is outstanding and I can honestly say my girlfriend and I were so happy with all our meals. My room was warm and comforting, bed very comfortable. The shower thermostat needed a bit of jiggling to get hot. The wifi signal in the evenings was poor at times, then again, the inn is surrounded by hills and the weather has been horrendous this week. I was happy with "value for money" as this was the best UK hotel experience I've ever had. Well done everyone! Regards David Miller

“Warm welcome from a very wet world”

Before we had arrived at the hotel, they had notified us of difficulties due to flooding in the area around the hotel and gave us alternative routes to avoid the worst of the situation. Before we had arrived at the hotel, they had notified us of difficulties due to flooding in the area around the hotel and gave us alternative routes to avoid the worst of the situation. On arrival the friendly staff gave us a warm welcome with a complementary drink at the bar. The rooms were tastefully presented and comfortable. The food over our stay was excellent, well prepared and presented by experienced and friendly staff. There was a slight problem with our first breakfast as an egg delivery had been seriously delayed due to the flooding, so we were unable to have eggs, however the breakfast we were served more than made up for the lack of an egg. All in all a brilliant stay, with grateful thanks to the “above and beyond” hospitality of the whole team.
