A last minute change of plans meant I needed last minute accommodation for a couple of nights in the Newton Abbot area. People living locally recommended The Passage Hotel and a quick 'phone call was met with a friendly response from Alicia, who couldn't have been more helpful. Fortunately for me it was not in Season and so there were vacancies, (I'm told during the Summer there are coachloads of guests and I can see why - the hotel is beautifully situated). Extensive refurbishment was under way, which meant the Reception, Bar, Restaurant and Breakfast room were all crammed into a smaller area, but even this was well thought out and catered for the fewer guests this time of year. All staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. My room in the South Lodge was clean, quiet, & had a view of the river. The bed was comfortable and I slept well. I found it good value for money and would certainly stay there again should the need arise.

The hotel is currently having building work done so the swimming pool and spa are not available. The temporary restaurant and reception area is very sparse and unwelcoming. The hotel is currently having building work done so the swimming pool and spa are not available. The temporary restaurant and reception area is very sparse and unwelcoming. We had booked a Timeshare studio apartment. It was dated and tatty and we had to move after the first night as the cooker hob wouldn’t get hot enough to cook. Paul the hotel manager was very helpful and offered us a duplex apartment. This was much nicer with everything working however the cupboard door knob fell off, the carpets were stained and grubby and the oven was dirty. We didn’t want to spoil our holiday by complaining again so made the most of it. With all the problems we had we will go back again once the refurbishment has finished. The views are spectacular, beds are comfortable with great quality linen and the staff were most helpful.
