“Hidden French Restaurant”

Absolute hidden gem in North West Devon, accommodation is very comfortable and the French owner/chef produces excellent and reasonably priced food. It’s slightly off the main tourist trail but the quality of food is well worth the journey.

I had supper and stayed the night. It was a busy Friday evening but as a sole diner I didn't feel neglected at all. The Copper bitter was a great start. The food was fantastic, Moules Mariniere with hunks of fresh home made bread, an outstanding sirloin steak with peppercorn sauce and a sticky toffee pud. Nothing fussy but a beautifully cooked tasty meal.

Oh boy !! Another amazing mid-week (Mon. - Fri.) stay. I travel and share a twin room with a friend and this August 2024 visit is probably the 4th or 5th visit and we're never disappointed ! The premises is a higgledy-piggledy fusion of 3 original period cottages, has a wonderful atmosphere and is more-or-less in the centre of Dolton village. It's also very quiet at night ! The accommodation is excellent, the staff are very friendly and a bit whacky with a crazy sense of humour which makes it all the better ! The food, as always, was excellent. The home made pies are something else !! This time they were steak and ale - 95% steak ! - and were PROPER pies with a (excellent) short-crust pastry top and bottom - not those dishes of find-the-meat gravy with a lid on ! The dinner menu is brief but excellent - that's the way to do it - keep it simple, do it well; and it's always done well. The included-in-the-price breakfast choice is also excellent - porridge or cereals to start if you want - I enjoy the "full english" - and there's toast, criossants, good coffee, tea etc., etc. What's not to enjoy ?! Book direct with the hotel for a better deal (10% off Aug 2024 but check their website. Do note that THE RESTAURANT/BAR IS CLOSED ON MONDAYS but the accommodation is however bookable for Mondays but you'll have to make your own arrangements for food and there are other pub/restaurants open Mondays within a few miles. Nothing to fault - it is what it is and that's excellent all round !!

A lovely village pub in a pretty village. My room was clean and comfortable, everything you need with a bath and shower combination. Dinner was excellent, and I'd definitely ask for a table in the bar if want a great buzzing atmosphere. It was an amazing breakfast, all locally sourced and beautifully cooked, perhaps the cereal selection could be a bit more extensive! It is how you would want your local village pub to be - everyone in the bar seemed to know each other with the bonus of great food if you wanted to eat. But, as a solo traveler on this occasion, to be honest I felt rather out of the clique having a drink at the bar when I arrived. Probably just me, but I'd say it's a place to stay as a couple or with fiends.
