“Well worth a visit!”

Gorgeous hotel. Rooms are spotless and bed was very comfy. Ate dinner and had a lovely GF lasagne, homemade which was reasonably priced too. Breakfast was plentiful and a good choice. Owner was very welcoming and friendly. Close to main amenities in Shepton.

A warm welcome and excellent service, great choice on the menu (including a very good selection of vegetarian options), fantastic food, very pleasant surroundings and atmosphere, would definitely recommend. Very good value for money too.

Saturday 21 June 2025, My husband and I broke our journey home and we made a stop at ‘The Shrubbery Hotel’ where were staying one night for dinner, bed and breakfast. The ‘Shrubbery Hotel’, was initially built as a Rectory and served a local Doctor, Alexander Finch. It was converted to a Hotel in 1950, with eight individually styled bedrooms. We arrived at ‘The Shrubbery Hotel’ around 5.30pm. We were greeted by the owner of the hotel a lovely lady called Debora and we were given a very warm welcome. We were then shown to our room, which was ‘Room No 108’ an attic room on the second floor at the front of the hotel up, some very steep stairs. The room was very hot but thank goodness it had a fan, which was so beneficial as was opening the windows and leaving them open all the time we were there. It was a medium size room that overlooked the main road and was a times a little noisy, but it was full of late afternoon sunshine. The furnishings were of natural pine wood which was in keeping with the age of the building. The bedroom décor was done out in light white stone coloured walls. We had a large double bed with white cotton sheets and duvet and two black and white cushions. There was a natural pine dressing table on which there was a kettle, bottled still water, a drinks box with tea, coffee and hot chocolate and complimentary biscuits. A wicker chair was in the corner by the window. We had a small en-suite shower room that had a telephone box type shower (it was a tight fit for me as it was not designed for voluptuous women). We had lots of lovely hot water, and white towels, and complimentary ‘Eden’ toiletries. It was completely done out in white with silver shower room fittings. One silly thing had been over looked was that there was no plug for the wash basin. My husband and I unpacked and settled in. We were both so tired due to the heat that we both fell asleep on the bed with the lovely cooling fan on for two hours. We awoke with a start and then had a quick wash and brush up before we went to dinner. My husband and I then went into ‘The Shrubbery Hotel Restaurant’ at eight for dinner. The restaurant was nice, bright airy and we were seated at a nice table for two. The table had silver cutlery and bright shiny glassware. We were given menus to look at and our drinks order was taken. My husband and I shared a tapas style starter of roasted red peppers and olives, breaded mushrooms, calamari, garlic bread and two garlic dips, which was very nice and got the palate started. My husband and for his main course had the Cowboy Sausage & Bean Casserole in a bread roll (an interesting concept) , this came served with a nice crisp salad and buttered corn on the cob, which he said was very nice. I had chilli con carni with rice and this came served with a sour cream dip and a guacamole dip. The chilli was very nice and quite filling. We washed all this lovely food down with three pints of ‘Thatcher’s Gold’ cider for my husband and two pints of ‘Thatcher’s Gold’ for me. We both had desserts, my husband had the strawberry ‘Eton’ mess, which he said was very nice. I had a scoop of vanilla ice cream with whipped cream and strawberry sauce, which was light and finished off my meal perfectly. Afterwards, we went into the bar and sat talking with Debora and one of her locals Anthony until quite late. They were really interesting people to talk too. Gone eleven, we both went back to our room, where we snuggled up in our bed like a pair of sleepy kittens and tried to get some sleep, the road traffic was noisy and there were late night revellers shouting until the early hours. Eventually we both fell asleep and got some reasonable sleep. Sunday 22nd June August 2025, My husband and I awoke reasonably refreshed. We both had a nice ‘hot’ shower and washed our hair to freshen up as it had been a very hot and muggy night. We then dressed and went downstairs for breakfast. My husband had rice crispies followed by smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toast and a nice pot of tea. I had fresh fruit and yoghurt followed by smashed avocado and runny poached eggs on sour dough bread and two cups of decaffeinated coffee, which set us up for the day. Afterwards, we packed our case in the car, settled our bill and said our ‘Farewells’ to the staff of the ‘The Shrubbery Hotel’ in Shepton Mallet.
