We simply cannot put into words how incredible our stay was at the Port Charlotte Hotel. I work in the hospitality industry for a major hotel group, and because of that, I often enjoy upgrades and extra attention when we stay at hotels, but I have never experienced this level of hospitality in my life. This will forever be the example I give to people when they ask about the best experiance I have ever had at a restaurant and hotel. We ended up getting stuck during Storm Amy that hit Scotland and Ireland during our stay, and what was supposed to be a two-night stay in Islay turned into a 5 night experience. What could have easily been the worst part of our vacation turned into the most memorable and incredible part of our trip. The hotel itself is full of island personality and charm; the historic building sits right alongside the water in the stunning and quaint town of Port Charlotte. The rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, and the restaurant is small and comfortable, with a talented culinary team that clearly cares about what they do. Everything we had while dining here was done well and delicious. What makes this hotel exceptional is, without a doubt, the staff and owners. During our stay, we learned that this has been family-owned for over 23 years. The owners clearly take great care of their staff and their guests, and it shows in the best way. Every person we encountered (Lorna, Liz, the wonderful restaurant team, and the bar teams) made us feel at home and part of the family. We were always greeted with a smile and unparalleled kindness. Every staff member was attentive, lovely, and went above and beyond to make us feel accommodated. Isabelle and Grahame, the hotel owners, made us feel like a priority. Going out of their way to help me when I was feeling under the weather by driving us to the pharmacy and picking me up cough drops. Grahame was also kind enough to give us a tour and provide us with the history of the island itself. They called us by name and treated us not just as guests, but as welcome friends. I could go on and on about how incredible our stay was at the Port Charlotte, but I will sum it up simply: If you are going to Islay, stay at the Port Charlotte hotel.

“Warm welcome and wonderful food.”

We were warmly welcomed on both days by Lorna and the team - Lorna is a terriffic manager who clearly understand true hospitality and therefore so does the team. The menu was interesting, with many points of difference and everything we tried - really flavoursome. Delightful experience on both days.

“Lovely hotel and lovely hotel manager”

The hotel manager, Lorna, really made our trip! She is so knowledgeable, friendly and helpful! We had only planned a couple of activities and she quickly helped us to fill in the rest of our time. Every suggestion she made was perfect! We had a lovely room with great views.

This smallish hotel has a super location right on the coast with great views across the water. We had a good room with a comfy king size bed and a lovely modern bathroom. It was clean, characterful and well presented with everything you need including free wifi. We arrived at a very busy time (island distilleries open days festival week) but the staff remained helpful, welcoming and friendly throughout our stay. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant which was enjoyable but rather pricy and the seafood was largely overcooked (scallops, halibut). However it was exceptionally hectic so we made exceptions. The excellent skin-on chips with the battered haddock were a joy! Breakfast was also served in the restaurant offering plenty of choice and inviting hot options. Enjoyed our comfortable stay.
