Perfectly-located for everything Greenock has to over, the Tontine Hotel is clearly at the heart of its local community, with interesting events and gatherings taking place nearly every day. I stayed for three nights and appreciated the welcome and helpful approach of staff, especially as I have a distant family connection to the town. The bedroom was functional but smart, intially a little over-heated, but I was helped with instructions on how to vary the temperature. The window overlooked a large courtyard with beautifully-tended colourful begonias, and of the elegant rear front of the original building. Not all areas were decorated to my taste, but it would be impossible to please everyone, whilst the breakfast and dining areas were fitted out beautifully. Breakfast was a true highlight - it tasted home-cooked, which is not always the case in larger establishments. Plenty of choice, and everything delicious. Evening meal also excellent, although the bar area in which it is served seemed a little cramped. Staff went out of their way to be helpful, even to the extent of looking up my next accommodation in a neighbouring area when I realised I had written the phone number down incorrectly. This was really appreciated, as details like this make such a difference to guests' experience. In short, I loved it here and would very much like to return someday!

“Absolutely fantastic!”

Absolutely fantastic place to stay! We have just got home tonight from a 3 night stay at the tontine and our 3 year old has been asking to go to the hotel already. Absolutely fantastic place to stay! We have just got home tonight from a 3 night stay at the tontine and our 3 year old has been asking to go to the hotel already. We stayed in the Lisle Suite and we couldn’t have asked for a better room, especially for our 3 year old and 2 month old baby, it had everything and more that was needed. The staff were absolutely brilliant at reception, in the bar and the restaraunt, nothing was too much for them and they were all pleasant and always smiling and made a special effort to engage with our toddler!

“Average at best - could be great”

The hotel is fine big plus it allows dogs, however for the price point I expected more. The rooms are clean, the TV is small and if the green agenda is at the forefront turn the heating downand provide hand soap, the tiny package wasn’t enough. Food is ok but service is slow, when there are 6 cus… lisää

The hotel is fine big plus it allows dogs, however for the price point I expected more. Food is ok but service is slow, when there are 6 customers over three table’s waiting so long for a drinks order shouldn’t be necessary. Breakfast reads well but taste wise is missing the mark. Staff are pleaseant, Noah in the bar is a particular highlight. Town is pleasant but with a bit more detail on the food offering this hotel could be a great find. Doubt we will return.

“Difficult disabled access”

Visited the hotel today for a funeral wake with my very elderly mum who walks short distances with a rollator. She is unable to negotiate stairs so we used the disabled access entrance at the rear of the hotel. Once in, there is a very long walk (for someone who has mobility problems) to the lift … lisää

Visited the hotel today for a funeral wake with my very elderly mum who walks short distances with a rollator. She is unable to negotiate stairs so we used the disabled access entrance at the rear of the hotel. Once in, there is a very long walk (for someone who has mobility problems) to the lift then, once out of the lift, another lengthy walk to the Ardgowan room where the wake was being held. I asked a member of staff if there was a wheelchair available that we could use to transport my mum back to the car which was parked at the rear of the hotel. The answer was no. I had to leave mum, go to the care home where she is a resident and borrow a wheelchair as there was no way she could have negotiated the lengthy corridors to get back to the car. I understand that in an old building, creating disabled access can be difficult however, given the lengthy corridors which have to be negotiated from the disabled access, it may be an idea for the hotel to have a wheelchair available on request for those customers who are unable to walk the required distances (but don't normally use a wheelchair).
