We had not planned to stay here but an injury forced us to cut short a week-long hike through the Dolomites. Having been curious about the Sexten area for years, we booked a room at Hotel Gruber shortly after arriving in town. We were lucky to get one of the last ones available. Unfortunately, it faced the hillside to the rear of the hotel and not the fantastic panorama of the Sextener Dolomites one would get with a front-facing room. Even so, our view was pleasant and the room quite comfy. Plus, we could enjoy the great view from the hotel's large deck. On arrival, I asked for an ice pack and extra pillow to attend to my wife's injured knee and staff were friendly and quick to assist. All of our subsequent interactions with staff in this family-run hotel matched the first. Our room price included half-board and the food was excellent, consistently the best of our five week trip. Breakfast provided many options that should satisfy anyone. The dinners linger in my memory many months after our visit. On our second day in Sexten we got an appointment with a local doctor who examined my wife's knee and gave a thumbs-down to any more trekking with a pack, but a thumbs-up for day hikes. So, we were able to at least get enough of an up-close look at the local mountains to make us want to return. If we do, I know we won't bother to check out alternate lodgings - we'll come back here. Thanks to the Gruber family for making our stay in Sexten a highlight of our trip!

We spent an enjoyable week in the Dolomites of Sesto in this beautiful family-run hotel. We have a little girl of 19 months and the owners were very helpful to prepare her dinners. "Meridiana" room was excellent, spacious, and very clean, superb balcony with sun loungers and views of the beautiful mountains. Classic and traditional cooking, very varied, and a rich breakfast have accompanied us throughout the week. Thanks to all Gruber family

I have visited many hotels in many different countries, sometimes for business, sometimes for holidays. Guesthouse (Gastehaus) Gruber in Sexten (Sesto), Italy is without doubt one of the best I have ever experienced. The family Gruber (Pepi, Marlene, Sonja and Christian) and their staff do their very best to make the guests feel welcome and comfortable, and they succeed in every way ! The atmosphere is warm and friendly from the first step the guest sets in the hotel, and this remains until the moment of departure. The hotel has been radically renovated and rebuild in 2008. This has resulted in a modern but also cosy and pleasant building, with many facilities and furnished with well-thought details. E.g. : a covered parking place is available for every hotelroom; cosy restaurant/bar with fixed reserved places for all hotel guests, so no queueing for breakfast and dinner; extensive wellness facilities in the basement (inclusive with the price of the hotelroom); modern elevator; excellent functioning wi-fi network (reasonable supplementary price, charged per used second); spacious public area’s; ski-closet with heated ski-shoe holders. Etc. etc. We had two double hotelrooms, each room equipped with a lcd-tv, two tables, two chairs, cabinet with mirror, spacious beds and a nice view. Separated from the sleeping area by a wall with an open passage, a large wardrobe closet and the entrance to the well equipped bathroom. In total aprox. 20 square metres, this is not seen that many in this price-range. All used materials are of good quality. Of course, all is very clean and it is kept very clean by the staff during your stay. The roomprices (with breakfast or half board) are very competitive, the price-quality ratio is without a doubt excellent. Rooms in various sorts and dimensions are available (also family rooms 4p. or 6p.). It is not mandatory to book for a whole week, not even in high season. The (continental) breakfast is of first-class quality and reasonably extensive . Also at nights you can have a good dinner here. For 20 euro p.p. extra half board can be booked. We booked rooms with breakfast only, and we liked that very much. We had dinner elsewhere in the village twice (pizza), and two times we enjoyed dinner a la carte at Gastehaus Gruber. The fixed reserved guestplace in the bar/restaurant is always available for you, the menucard is compact and the food is excellent, both in quality and in amount. And we even ended up slightly cheaper a la carte, compared to the extra charge for half board. Conclusion : as for me, this cosy, midsized hotel is close to perfection. The surroundings : the village of Sexten (Sesto) is situated in the Hochpustertal in South-Tyrol. This is Italy, but the official language is mainly German. The infrastructure, the people and the atmosphere everytime make you think you are in Austria instead of Italy. Sexten is a nice village with all necessary facilities (shops, restaurants, public transportation, petrolstation, ski-lifts, skiing school, ski rentals, tourist office etc.), but not particular beautiful. Nature, on the contrary, is glorious : the Sextner Dolomites (Unesco world heritage) are present everywhere, and offer splendid views. The rich nature around Sesto can be enjoyed both during winter and summer. Activities in the wintertime include a.o. : alpine skiing (reasonable to good; 77 km. well maintained slopes), cross-country skiing (excellent, more than 200 km. well prepared tracks) and walking. Prices of ski-rentals, ski-passes etc.are slightly below the level of the well-known ski-resorts. By the way, don’t expect fancy apres-ski parties, the area is more suitable for people who prefer relaxed, quiet afternoons and nights. This atmosphere makes it a good destination for a family holiday. During summer there are of course many walking and strolling opportunities in the magnificent Dolomites, as well as other activities. Both Gastehaus Gruber and the Sextner Dolomites are higlhy recommended. I sincerely hope that the kind Gruber family will receive the guests they deserve.
