“Excellent hotel and excellent service. Privileged location and views”

We stayed at this hotel for five days during the Bon Odori festival in August. The first night we arrived (very late at night) we didn't expect the warm welcome from the hotel staff we received, as we were really tired and hungry after 500 kilometers by car from Narita airport. They had prepared a dinner for us and served it in our private room. This was really a boost for all of us after such an exhausting trip (both by plane from Spain and by car from Narita). We did really appreciate this as it was the turning point from a tiring holiday start into a happy and rewarding feeling. We had booked a Japanese style room through Japanican and it was in the fifth floor. It was very spacious with a toilet, bath and entrance. During the night the tatami floor was occupied by futons and in the morning when we went to the breakfast service (down in the second floor) the room service stored the futons and put two low tables and four low chairs in the room Japanese style nicely arranged with cookies and a kettle with green tea. Later in the afternoon we had our diner in the room and a Japanese lady in Kimono came to our room and served a wonderful dinner to us. She was very helpful in showing us how to use the different dishes and tried to explain in Japanese what was each of the different food and sauces in the menu. We did our best to understand her but I'm not sure we get all the useful information about the food and the instructions on how to mix the dishes she was patiently trying to tell us. We enjoy a lot this dinner time and her attempts to make us understand what are the Japanese dishes and how to eat it. The hotel has a spa area (or onsen in Japanese). One for man and another for women. I used the onsen quite a lot as has one pool in the open air overlooking the Yoshida river and this is quite a unforgettable time to bath in the onsen and have the magnificent river flowing at your feet. During the afternoon the hotel organized trips by bus to the Gujo city to join the Bon Odori dance for the hotel guests from 20:00 hours until midnight. The hotel provided kimonos and Japanese wooden clogs for the hotel guests to dress adequately and join to the native dancers in Gujo Bon Odori party which we enjoy and dance a lot. As we were the only western guests in the hotel and the staff did not speak English at all, the hotel manager arranged to include in the second day a English interpreter for us during our stay. This was really magnificent and we fell like at home. She did a great job for us arranging tours around the city to visit wonderful caves up in the mountain, and preparing lessons in Gujo city to learn how to dance the Bon Odory 10 different steps. We enjoy a lot and really appreciate her support and the job she did. In all Hotel Gujo Hachiman is a hidden gem and I would recommend this hotel to anybody that is looking for a good and relaxing Japanese style hotel.

“Large hotel catering to tour groups”

“Charming local hotel but location is inconvenient”

We stayed two nights at this hotel in December 2014. The hotel is quite a distance away from Gujo Hachiman town centre.
