“Cosy but big rooms”

Took a 1-hour bus ride from Chitose Airport (coach bus, families with luggages do not have to worry). Booked 2 rooms for 3 adults and 2 children. Took a 1-hour bus ride from Chitose Airport (coach bus, families with luggages do not have to worry). Booked 2 rooms for 3 adults and 2 children. Had 1 room with bath as we did not want to use the public bathroom. Bathroom is small but functional. The property is a 15-min walk from the shopping area, not very convenient in case of heavy snowing. Staff is very helpful even though limited convo in English. We will return!

“Superb stay!”

Superb stay at this ryokan, despite it being a short walk from the main area. We had a room with a view and it was very pleasant. The onsen was great although small. Superb stay at this ryokan, despite it being a short walk from the main area. We had a room with a view and it was very pleasant. The onsen was great although small. The kaiseki dinner was super delicious and I was pleasantly surprised. I contacted the ryokan prior to arrival to inform them that one of my family member does not eat raw food and they took note of that and made sure that they had replaced all raw food with other options. It is very thoughtful of them to do so. I had a good time interacting with the staff at the breakfast service too and they even taught us how to eat natto properly. There was a large spread served at breakfast, with a buffet corner in addition to the meal served. I would say that this hotel is extremely value for money!

“Fantastic!”

We only stayed one night at Hanaya, but it was the highlight of our two week trip. It was a much better choice than staying one of the large hotels full of group tours. We only stayed one night at Hanaya, but it was the highlight of our two week trip. It was a much better choice than staying one of the large hotels full of group tours. The service was excellent but non intrusive. They helped park our rental car and we were offered a lift to the Jigokudani where we had a lovely walk around the hiking trails to the volcanic lake. Onsen was small but very private and cosy. The Kaiseki dinner served in the sitting area of the japanese western room was magnificent and as we booked a celebratory package, we were able to sample various local drinks like sochu, sake and plum wine. When we checked out, we were given a photograph taken at dinner as souvenir. It was such a lovely touch. Overall a top notch experience and I would highly recommend!

“Disappointed!”

On the edge of town and a good walk away from local shops, restaurants and Hell Valley, this small ryokan is comfortable, although a little dated in decor. On the edge of town and a good walk away from local shops, restaurants and Hell Valley, this small ryokan is comfortable, although a little dated in decor. Our room was spacious with a view of the river nearby and snow covered hillsides. There is a very small lounge overlooking a tiny garden, but strangely it is not permitted to sit there and drink the free beverages provided in the afternoon - "Go to your room to drink" says the signage! Our meals served in our room by a charming lady were good and plentiful and all staff were very friendly and helpful, with a shuttle bus provided from the station and to Hell Valley on request. We were disappointed with the baths, both indoor and outdoor, which were all very small and certainly smaller than they appeared in the photos. All baths were also run down and in need of maintenance and upgrading. The tokonoma in our room had a picture hanger but there was no picture or decoration attached. Of the six onsen we stayed at in Hokkaido and Honshu during our visit, we felt this one offered the least value for money.
