As part of our 10-day self-drive vacation, my family and I stayed one weekday night in this non-smoking Hotel Nikko Northland Obihiro that is situated next to the JR Obihiro Station and near to the Obihiro Zoo and the Tokachigawa Onsen. Getting to hotel & parking: We drove to the hotel from Naitai Highland (Kogen) Farm and Naitai Terrace in 55 minutes via Google Map and Apple Map using the Apple Car Play and arrived at about 5pm. Upon unloading our luggage at the front entrance, a hotel concierge gentleman staff referred me to the information board outside about above ground parking or underground parking. I opted for underground parking so that we would not be impacted during rain and the same hotel concierge staff again kindly provided me directions. There were several empty car park lots. After parking the rental car, I looked for the “Hotel Lobby” signage and took the elevator to the lobby level where I then paid ¥500 to the front desk for unlimited entry into the underground car park. From the Obhiro Airport, you could drive to the hotel in about 40 minutes or take the airport transfer/shuttle limousine bus operated by a local bus company which charges ¥1000 per person (pay the same from hotel to Obihiro Airport). If you take the train, after exiting the gate at the JR Obihiro Station (K31, Nemuro Line), go towards the East Wing (東出口), turn right in front of the Midori counter and the hotel is on your left once you exit the train station. Hotel staff: The gentleman receptionist who checked us in was friendly and spoke fluent English. He later provided us a map showing us the location of the butadon restaurants and stores selling Obihiro sweets (Rokkatei, Ryugetsu etc). When you are in Obihiro, you have to eat the famous butadon or pork bowl (grilled to perfection pork cutlets with rice). Once we selected Butahage restaurant inside the JR Obihiro Station, the gentleman receptionist went out of his way to bring us outside the hotel entrance and directed us toward the JR Obihiro Station. The hotel concierge staff was helpful in providing the directions for underground parking. All the hotel staff greeted us whenever we walked past each other. We really appreciate the warm hospitality at this hotel. Hotel room: The 27 square metres non-smoking Triple Room on the sixth floor was spacious enough to fit three single beds but not the second orange chair such that the latter was placed next to the refrigerator thereby reducing the width of the pathway to the bedroom. Besides the three single beds and the two orange chairs, the room comes with a wall-mounted LCD TV, a refrigerator, dressing table with plenty of drawers, a round coffee table, two sofa chairs, one central bedside table with a telephone, torch light and a console having manual knobs to control lighting and a digital display of the time (mix of old and modern). On top of the refrigerator are 3 cups, 3 glass cups, 3 bottles of drinking water, a kettle and several Itoen green tea packets and coffee packets. It is interesting that the wardrobe is next to the en suite bathroom. The square tiled bathroom has a bath tub, Japanese bidet cistern and the complete set of toiletries, plastic cups and towels all laid nicely. I liked the following about the hotel room: (1) the beds were comfortable such that we have a good night sleep (2) the room is very quiet due to good noise insulation and also it faces a car park that is next to the JR Obihiro Station as well as the Philharmonic Hall and Tokaichi Plaza to the left. (3) it is very clean and well maintained (4) there are two sinks – one outside the bathroom (opposite the wardrobe) and the other in the bathroom. (5) three coloured lines (blue, green and orange) and words for the three bath towels so as to differentiate usage. (6) chargeable cable in the drawer for CDMA, FOMA 3G, micro and Type C. (7) complimentary wi-ifi access with fast connection speed (8) the cute drawings of animals and vegetables on the “Made in Tokachi” cups and room card. I disliked the following about the hotel room: (1) even though there are two walls with white wallpaper with pale circles, the room still looked really dull with the grey curtains, worn out dark grey carpet, dark brown quilt covers and two wood panels covering the entire wall above the beds with one in reddish-brown and the other in orange-brown. (2) there is no iron, no ironing board, no safe and no minibar (3) power socket next to the sink which run the risk of electrocution when water somehow gets into the socket. Hotel restaurant: We only ate breakfast (part of room package) at the Restaurant J. The restaurant opens 6:30am (or 6am in the summer months) to 10am; we were there at 7am and there were plenty of empty seats but once it reached 8am, the entire restaurant with limited seating capacity was full. The “Tokkaichi Morning Buffet” spread include scrambled eggs, sausages, soft-boiled eggs, cut fruits (banana, grapefruit, apple), salad (including cooked broccoli), Japanese rice, Shijimi clam soup, stir-fried Chinese yam, Tokaichi pumpkin, Nikuzyaga (Japanese style pork and potato stew), natto, cooked salmon, bread, macaroni, bread and coffee. Other hotel amenities in this hotel is a launderette. There is no gymnasium, no swimming pool and no onsen. Nevertheless, we did a morning jog at the empty car park next to the hotel or along the JR Obihiro Station in the morning. Overall, we had a pleasant stay at this 4-star hotel which look after the hotel guests really well. We will come back again the next time we visit Obihiro.

Located right in the heart of Obihiro, Hotel Nikko Northland was easy to find and great for exploring this charming town in Hokkaido. It’s a large and business hotel, meaning it’s well equipped, has many rooms and provides evening needed for an overnight stay. Our room was a decent size and we had enough room to open luggage and not bump into each other. The bed was comfy, we slept well so no dramas there. In room facilities were pretty decent, with coffee and tea and also an extremely handy charging cable / adapter that came in very handy. Breakfast was so-so and we had a bit of a wait before we could eat so best to consider timing in advance. There’s a car park next to the hotel and the staff were all super helpful and spoke English. I’d definitely recommend staying here if you’re in this town.

“Comfortable Stay, Nice Room”

Stayed here while on a photo tour of the area. The hotel rooms are nicely appointed and more significant-sized by some standards than typical Japanese hotel rooms. We enjoyed our stay; the breakfast and the location next to the Train Station make it also desirable.

“Big Hotel”

Big hotel next to the station, friendly staff and welcoming, clean and comfy room, underground carpark, besides of restaurants there has no other facilities. Sure I will come back if the price is right.
