Nice, well dimensioned hotel with a lot of indoor and outdoor facilities near a great beach. Especially on the highest floors the sea views are wonderful. But why no outside pool and charging 900 yen for the inside one? That’s a big let down. Overall I think it’s one if not the best hotel near the beach, but it could be better, and be a 5* resort

“disappointing at first”

My first impression when arriving at the hotel was rather disappointing. The interior of the building and my room really showed their age. My first impression when arriving at the hotel was rather disappointing. The interior of the building and my room really showed their age. In its prime – maybe 40 or 50 years ago – the hotel must have been a state of the art accommodation. Meanwhile the glamour seems to have gone. I found the cover of the chairs slightly torn and cigarette holes in the curtain. The walls showed signs of bruises where over the years luggage and bags made involuntary contact. All in all it would be time for some new coating. On the other hand I appreciated a few clever details like the switch for the fridge and the separate door to the bedroom, which really shut off the noise from the corridor completely at night. The window (with a wonderful view over the park and the beach) could be opened slightly although it is advised not to (“Please close the windows in your rooms. Various insects might visit your room since Aoshima has rich nature”). The room itself as well as the bathroom with separate toilet were of generous size. Furthermore, I very much enjoyed the hot springs on the third floor as well as the wide and varied choices at the breakfast buffet each morning. The hotel has easy access to the promenade along the beach into the village of Aoshima as well as Aoshima Island and it is lit at night. The walk along at sunset was a very pleasant experience. During my stay at the so-called “Golden Week” there were a fair number of families with young children as well as well as seasoned and novice surfers staying at the hotel. This made up for a rather interesting mix of mostly Japanese guests, which made me feel at ease very much. Last but not least, all the staff were tremendously friendly and on several occasions went out of their way to answer questions and make things happen. In short: for me the real charm of the place only became apparent on second sight and I would happily stay there again.

Average standard. The reason why I gave four and not three stars is thanks to the Chinese restaurant, a relatively rare occurrence in the hotels we’ve stayed so far in Kyushu. And its food is not bad!! They got my room incorrectly, which is a shame given that I had earlier reinforced (not merely instructed, but reinforced) to my agent (who in turn reinforced to the Japanese agency, who supposedly reinforced to the hotel). However they made amends when I reported to the reception. I did not go to the onsen, but my friends who went told me it was “small”.
