Incredible, cool, historical. I stayed with a hiking group and the dinner was soooo good. It was a fancy meal of fugu, sashimi, hot pot and more. The manager dude, Sato, has excellent English and is very friendly and professional. I slept well on a futon, and the air conditioning was great. The breakfast buffet was very good. Loved it.

“Glorious mix of Western and Japanese styles”

This ryokan was the last stop on our Nakasendo trail walk, and it was a perfect ending to a wonderful trip. We loved the history of the hotel, and the eclectic lobby. The room was the most comfortable we stayed in because they actually had a couple Western style chairs, and private bathrooms. Wh… lisää

This ryokan was the last stop on our Nakasendo trail walk, and it was a perfect ending to a wonderful trip. We loved the history of the hotel, and the eclectic lobby. The room was the most comfortable we stayed in because they actually had a couple Western style chairs, and private bathrooms. While the onsen wasn't the most elaborate, it was very nice, and much appreciated after a cold, rainy walk from the train station. The food was absolutely terrific. Yes, the breakfast was a buffet, which is not typical, but what an excellent buffet!

We stayed at this hotel/ryokan during our recent Nakasendo Trail walking holiday. I can't recommend this experience highly enough. The welcome was so warm from all the staff, the onsen bath perfect after a day's hiking and the dinner menu one of the most delicate and delicious we had in Japan during our fortnight holiday. The buffet breakfast featuring both western and Japanese options was plentiful. We were also able to enjoy a cup of tea in the lounge and read the English newspaper. The hotel is also near to cafes, bars, restaurants and shops whilst still exuding a sense of peace and tranquility. Highly recommend this place to stay if you are passsing through Karuizawa.

“Lovely historic mountain retreat”

Our two night stay at Hotel Tsuruya was very cozy. We stayed in a traditional ryokan room that had a nice view of fall trees. Our two night stay at Hotel Tsuruya was very cozy. We stayed in a traditional ryokan room that had a nice view of fall trees. The seating was comfortable and our table had a warmer which made it that much nicer in the chilly evenings! The room also included tea, television, books about Karuizawa (only in Japanese, however) and yukatas. The futons were pretty comfortable compared to others we'd slept on. Note that this hotel is historic and it shows. If you're looking for modern lodging, this isn't it. It's worth noting that this hotel is at the top of the main shopping street in Kyu-Karuizawa. In the off season it felt a little eerie being at the top of the quiet hill once everything closed up for the evening. If you go out for dinner and drinks you'll have more options the farther down you go (between an 8 - 20 minute walk). There isn't much in the immediate area. The staff was very nice and accommodating and overall I would recommend this hotel!
