The room is huge with a sofa area and an elevated platform for the beds . Only one pillow is supplied though . It would be better if two pillows are supplied . Wifi is fast . The onsens are in two different buildings . The dinner is one of the best kaiseiki dinners we have ever eaten with A5 Nagasaki beef , cheese fondue , live abalone cooked in a small pot . Breakfast is Japanese style . Stay here for the dinner.

Fukudaya is located about 10 minutes walk from the main onsen street. But the Tourists Information Center is right across the road. It is a historical building with an addition of new wing building. Fukudaya is located about 10 minutes walk from the main onsen street. But the Tourists Information Center is right across the road. It is a historical building with an addition of new wing building. The reception staff speak a little English which is already very helpful. The only one elevator is a bit small and guests may have to wait for a while. Our room is big by Japanese standard, though a bit dated. The thermostat only provides on and off option, you can not set the temperature, so you have to turn on and off to make the room more comfortable. The hotel provides a free welcome drink at the bar on the top floor of the new wing. The bar equipped with a juke box providing old songs. The outdoor public onsen is located on the same floor, with a nice view of surrounding landscape. The only restaurant is also located in the new wing. Both the dinner and breakfast is very nice, especially the abalone, the mini fondue and the sushi. The family onsen is a really exceptional place where the onsen water has a strong sulphuric smell. So one can deduce that the onsen water is real. In fact in Unzen you can see hot spring and smoke nearly everywhere.

I stayed in the new building of Fukudaya. The old building is more than 50 years old and the new building was completed in 2016 with only 7 rooms which have modern decorations. I stayed in the new building of Fukudaya. The old building is more than 50 years old and the new building was completed in 2016 with only 7 rooms which have modern decorations. Besides, there is in-room outdoor onsen in every room. The outdoor public onsen of the ryokan is on the top floor of this new building. If you stay in the new building, the minibar is free and they refill it every day. If you go there from Nagasaki, you can take Nagasaki Keneibus. It takes around 1.5 hours. You can take off right in front of the ryokan. I stayed there for two nights. Their breakfast and dinner were quite nice. They will prepare dinner menus for you if you stay there for more than one night.

It was an comfortable 40-minute drive from Shimabara Port to Unzen on a drizzly misty Wednesday afternoon. Fukudaya is easy to pick out in this small mountain resort being the tallest-looking. We found making reservations directly on the hotel website a little tricky so resorted to a booking platform. However a request for the new premium wing could not be entertained so we settled for the older main building. Negative online comments of the old rooms seemed unfounded as they were very clean and neat - yes, there were some very minor wear and tear issues but nothing so serious. Our rooms #305 & #306 were small but well laid out with a western bed area and a tatami style sitting area. The prefab bathroom is equally compact but fully equipped with all the conveniences. Things we loved about Fukudaya: - warm helpful welcoming reception & efficient valet service - private dining in the new wing and tasty meals for both dinner and breakfast - the relaxing indoor & outdoor hot spring baths - comfy yukatas and jackets being the regular dress code in the hotel. - the roof top bar (new wing) with the 70’s juke box We will not hesitate to return!
