One of the best decisions we made during our recent trip to Japan was staying at the Ohashikan. We stayed in a standard room overlooking the Ohashi River. The room was large and quiet. The futon beds were placed on top of foam mattresses and were very comfortable. The wifi was very good. The staff, especially James, were friendly and very helpful. Ohashikan has an excellent location. It is a ten minute or so walk to the Matsue Castle and the Castle area which includes Lafcadio Hearn’s Residence and Museum, and a longer walk in the other direction to the center of town and the railroad station. On the first night we dined at the hotel’s restaurant. The Japanese food was wonderful. Even if you don’t stay at the hotel go to the restaurant and enjoy the food at Shosuitei. We opted for the western breakfast which was also excellent, The hotel recently started a bar and grill, The Willows, on the 2nd floor with a long bar overlooking the river with James as the bartender/host. He offers specialty cocktails and superb Japanese whiskies. Its hours were Tuesday to Saturday from 5:30 to 10 pm when we stayed at the hotel. In addition to the local sites, if you have time, take a day trip by train to the Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi with its garden. When you exit the Yasugi train station there is a free shuttle bus that takes you to the museum. If you travel to Matsue a stay at the Ohashikan is highly recommended. It will help make you visit a very special experience.

If you come to Matsue, this is the place to stay - spacious rooms, delicious food and above all great service. James, the manager and married into the family that owns the property, pulled out all the stops, from advice on local attractions, to a very speedy recovery of a briefcase left in the back of a taxi, to a recommendation of simply the best (and best value) sushi we had in 14 days in Japan. He even delivered us there himself and helped us order. Thank you James.

“Peaceful, comfortable ryokan”

Nice spot on the river. Very welcoming staff. We walked from the train station and Matsue Castle is walkable too. Quaint boutique shopping streets around the ryokan. Nice spot on the river. Very welcoming staff. We walked from the train station and Matsue Castle is walkable too. Quaint boutique shopping streets around the ryokan. Meals were tasty and plenty of food. The onsen sizes are quite different so it's nice they switch hours. The welcome wagashi was an interesting three layer red bean mochi and crunchy layer. I got some for omiyage but they have a short expiration, probably the mochi part gets hard.

“Nice ryokan on the water”

Excellent location and service in this ryokan overlooking the river. The staff speaks limited English, but this is not a problem since we found ways to understand each other (Google translate). It is an easy walk to the castle and other attractions and museums in the area.
