“Great Stay at base of Signal Hill”

Spent the weekend and really enjoyed our stay. Room was fantastic and location was perfect. Room has everything required to enjoy quiet evening or to make a complete meal. Lots of room and spacious set up.

We were delighted with our stay at Signal Hill Gate by Premiere Executive Suites. We had a high end studio on the ground floor. It was immaculately presented with a spacious and modern layout, massive king bed, widescreen TV and generous bathroom. I was a little worried the entry arrangements might be complex but I needn't have been concerned. Everything was as promised. I made use of the fitness centre which includes a couple of treadmills, a star climber, and free weights, among other items of equipment. The cable TVs are also very welcome. The building is very well located close to the central city - a healthy stroll to the central city nightlife or a short cab ride if you don't feel up to walking, or the weather is poor. It's not far from the Terry Fox Monument or Signal Hill itself, as the name would suggest. We didn't encounter any members of staff as we stayed outside of office hours, but didn't require assistance. The free wifi was fast and reliable. We would definitely stay here again - in fact, we'd actively seek it out.

I stayed at this hotel for 2.5 weeks in Feb 2021. Buckle up, cause this is a long review, but I really wanted to give a good idea of what this place was like and what you can expect. LOCATION AND APPEARANCE: The location of the hotel was nice, surrounded by residential houses. I stayed here during the pandemic and a lockdown (outbreak in the area during my stay), so I didn’t go out much. There was free parking onsite which was really nice, and it was shovelled often. I received email instructions on how to enter the building and receive my keys. I didn’t see any hotel staff during my “check-in”. I’m not sure if this is normal or a COVID thing. There was a gym onsite, but I never once used it, as the city was in lockdown when I was there. HOTEL STAFF: Prior to arriving, there was a lot of back and forth with myself and a lady named “Lori”. She was excellent. Very helpful and understanding when dates and timings were changed last minute due to work. She was also helpful when I needed to extend my stay due to my flight being delayed 24 hours. Honestly, this is what makes me hesitate giving the hotel 3/5 stars - because Lori was awesome. Once onsite, I only saw a worker once in the hotel. I believe they are only onsite during the day, and on-call during the evenings, which I found a bit odd for a hotel, but I know they are tailoring this hotel more for stays longer than a few days. There was a sign at my door that said “This suite door locks automatically behind you. Please take your keys. A $25 lockout fee will apply. Thank you for your cooperation.” My colleague who was on location the same time I was got locked out (the doors close quite quickly). He had to call to get someone to unlock his door in the evening - it took about 10 minutes for them to come by, and they ended up not charging him. I understand the sign is a reminder to take your keys, but I also know other hotels don’t charge this (or threaten to charge this) and have on-site workers 24/7. ROOM: The room itself was overall nice and I loved that it had a full kitchen with in-suite laundry. The room wasn’t as clean as I had hoped. I ended up using Lysol wipes and wiping EVERYTHING down just to be sure, after counters and light switches didn’t look clean, some dishes weren’t as clean as I wanted and the stove wasn’t very clean either (I spent some time cleaning that stovetop and left it looking almost brand new!). The walls definitely could use a fresh coat of paint, and the carpet in the “living room” area had some stains. Any dishes that I used, I washed myself prior to. When I emailed to ask if they confirm that the dishes are actually clean after someone checks out, they didn’t specifically answer my question, so I was given the impression that if the dishes are in the cupboards, they assume they’re clean; I just can’t assume that so I washed everything I used first. As well, there are no food containers provided for the kitchen, so make sure you bring your own. I’ve attached a list of things that they provided (dishes, utensils, toilettes) as I think this will be useful for those looking at this hotel. When I emailed asking about restock for some amenities (toilet paper, papertowel, garbage bags), they said they only provide initial items and the guest has to go out and get more to last them their stay. I keep relating it back to a regular hotel (and maybe I shouldn’t be??), but I would never be expected to go out to buy more toilet paper. They did end up giving me 2 more rolls for my stay, but don’t expect that to happen. I brought extra papertowel as I saw another review that said to. 1 small shampoo and body wash were provided (no conditioner) so that doesn’t last long. I also brought my own towel and hand towel as I read the towels provided were old; I’m glad I brought them. I also brought laundry supplies, which you will need to, as they provide enough for 1 load of wash and no dryer sheets. They supply a dish sponge and a small bottle of dish soap which was enough for my stay. They also give 2 dishwasher pods, but I hand-washed my dishes. For garbage, they give about 5 small garbage bags, which fills up quickly when you have takeout or groceries. Again, you have to bring your own to resupply (or buy. Which I don’t agree with). If you throw your garbage out loose in the bins and they catch you, they say they will charge you for that. You also have to take all your garbage out to the bins (side of the hotel) before checking out, or they can charge you. As far as I could see, they also don’t recycle or give an option to recycle cans and cardboard, which I think is really unacceptable nowadays. Regarding room cleaning, you only get housekeeping if you stay longer than 21 days. Therefore, if you say for 2.5 weeks (which I did), you need to bring your own laundry supplies to wash the bedding and towels, and all your own cleaning supplies, which adds up. I personally think they should be offering weekly housekeeping. Regarding TV and internet, I never once turned on the TV so I can’t confirm if there was cable or good TV. For internet, I could stream my TV streaming service and complete my normal tasks on the internet, so that was good. Sometimes I had issues connecting my work computer to the internet, but it would work if I kept troubleshooting and restarting. The blinds didn’t completely cover the windows at an angle, so I was acutely aware of that. The room was really cold when I got there, and it took all evening to somewhat warm up the room (my colleague in another suite said the same thing). In your welcome letter, they suggest putting your room temp down to 18-19 degrees C when not in the room, and also notes that if amenities cost more than the average stay, you may be charged more…I turned my heat up initially to 21 degrees, than to 25 because it just didn’t warm up. During my working days, I did turn it back down to 19 degrees, but turned it back to 25 as soon as I was “home” because it was chilly and warmed up so slowly. I had a king sized bed, and it was really comfortable. There was an extra blanket in the closet, but it had a small red stain on one side, but because I was so cold, I washed the blanket and used it right after and I needed it! The closet had hangars for your clothes, and there was a laundry basket and a set of drawers to unpack and organize your clothes in. The top of the drawers and table had a glass top installed; I assume to protect the furniture, but it was dirty underneath and you could easily see the dirt, but couldn’t clean it. The bathroom in my suite had a big soaker tub and a separate standup shower, which was great. There was also a lot of counter space which was really nice to have. Again, no housekeeping for 20 days or less, and no toilet bowl cleaner or cleaner for your mirror, so take that into account. BREAKFAST: No breakfast provided. They do have an option during the pandemic to have someone grocery shop for you. You make a list of groceries (very generic, like “peanut butter” but you don’t have a selection, and the grocery store they go to doesn’t have a working website right now), and they’ll pick it up for you and charge it to your room. It’s $50 service fee, which in my mind wasn’t worth it, so I found an app that did it for $5.00 (if your self-isolating like I was). I don’t want to name the app, as I personally wouldn’t use it again unless absolutely necessary, as it has some ridiculous prices. Just know there are other options if $50 is too much for you, like it was for me! PRICE: I paid $125CDN per night for a studio room (suite 104). It was was a fairly decent price and it was worth it for me to have the kitchen and in-suite laundry! OVERALL: I will continue to recommend this hotel to my future colleagues coming into the province to complete essential work, because of the amenities listed (laundry, kitchen). I think maybe I need to change my mindset from a hotel, to short-stay rentals, because that’s what this really is. Things that you expect should be apart of the stay when paying $125/night (sufficient toilet paper, housekeeping, etc.) just isn’t part of the deal. There were many “threats” for charging more (lock out charge, garbage, cost of AC/heat too high, broken/lost dishes, etc.) which made me nervous that I would have random fees added to my bill at the end. If you’re planning to stay just a few nights, I don’t think it’s really worth it. I also think they should update the room (can’t speak for all the rooms, but I can for suite 104), specifically the carpet, a fresh coat of paint, blinds, and I think they need to do a better job at cleaning the rooms. If you want/need a room with a full kitchen and in-suite laundry, with free parking, I think this is a really good option.
