“Nice hotel choice in Yellowknife, NWT”

I enjoyed my 4-night stay at the Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife. The room was clean and well-appointed and the bedding comfortable. Friendly, efficient staff. Restaurant is solid. I appreciated walkable proximity to downtown.

I was not expecting to be this impressed when I booked a stay in a small town, but this hotel completely exceeded my expectations in every way. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel genuinely welcome—friendly, attentive, and eager to help with anything I needed. The room was spotless, beautifully decorated, and surprisingly modern while still keeping a cozy, local charm. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and I had one of the best nights of sleep I’ve had in a long time. Little touches like fresh coffee, quality toiletries, and thoughtful amenities really made a difference. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone passing through. A true gem—five stars all the way!

“Not the grand experience I was hoping for”

I understand that the fire has caused some problems in the front entrance. There is one narrow double doorway to pass through to enter the lobby. I understand that the fire has caused some problems in the front entrance. There is one narrow double doorway to pass through to enter the lobby. You would think that a hotel with such a good reputation would help people get through it when clearly struggling with luggage. No. The front desk staff just sand there and watch. three of them, clearly doing nothing else. There is only one working elevator. It says no luggage. How is one supposed to get their luggage up to their room? Upon arriving, the rooms are mostly clean, but shabby and in need of a coat of paint. Deeper inspection shows debris from the last guest in the less obvious areas to pass a vacuum. I read another review where a solo traveler was treated as less than a first class guest in the main dining room. Although they weren't busy, I had the same experience. They looked at me with distain when I said I was eating alone. There were five window tables and all three other parties' guests were immediately offered a window table but they tried to give me a corner near the kitchen. I had to speak up and tell them I wanted a view like everyone else. The bar, with its cozy fire place and lighter dinner fare was the saving grace of the whole stay, It was low key and relaxed with friendly, helpful staff. Hopefully once they get the repairs done in the entrance area they will turn their attention to upkeep in the rest of the hotel which is getting dingy.
