After traveling for 27 hours from the US to Greece, we were beyond tired upon arrival at Adia Aluma where we had booked a 2-night stay to recover from jet lag before flying out again. We were so discombobulated that we couldn't even find our assigned room on the 7th floor and had to ask one of the staff for directions. Then Hubby couldn't find his carry-on bag, which contains all his money and his ID, and he thought he had left it in the Uber car we rode from the airport to the hotel. So we raced back down to the lobby and explained the problem, where the front desk staff was immediately sympathetic and assisted us to try to contact the Uber driver. Meanwhile, one of the housekeeping staff found the bag on the wrong floor where Hubby had left it and brought it down to the lobby. We could have cried with relief. We were so exhausted that we slept twelve hours and nearly missed breakfast, which is served late until 11:00 a.m. daily. I popped an eyeball open at 10:42 and shook Hubby awake so we could throw on some clothes and brush our teeth before heading downstairs. I arrived at the breakfast dining room 10:57, and the staff told me to grab a plate and fill it because they had to shut down the breakfast bar in three minutes. Meanwhile, Hubby had gone back upstairs because he forgot something and didn't arrive until after 11:00. But he told the staff he was with me, and he was allowed in. We weren't booted out until 11:30, when we were notified that the dining room had to be prepared for lunch. And we were allowed to take what was left of our breakfast back up to the room. Everyone went above and beyond to accommodate us during the very off-kilter first hours of our stay. The breakfast buffet was phenomenal. There must be 30 feet of gourmet options (like beets with bleu cheese and walnuts!) lining the bar on one side of the room, and the other side has a dozen different types of breads and pastries as well as a custom omelet station. There are baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables and a gourmet coffee machine - everything you could imagine for a breakfast menu. This is one of the finest breakfasts bars I've seen anywhere in the world, and we've stayed at more than 300 hotels. The dining room here is huge and probably accommodates 200 people at a time. Moving on, we loved the layout of the room. Space in historic Athens obviously comes at a premium, but with the mirrored walls and metal decor and ceilings, our room looked and felt twice as big as it was. The shelving separating the main room from the bedroom area was ingenuis because we could pile items high there and leave floor space open. And I loved the view from the 7th floor of the orange trees lining the street below. I loved the deep tub in the living area and had a couple of soothing soaks after walking miles exploring the city. One pointer though if you use the tub - be sure to use extra caution keeping the floor area dry or you will go flying on wet tile. Amenities here are upper-upscale. The entire bathroom is gorgeous granite from floor to ceiling. Guests are provided with dental kits, shaving kits, sewing kits, etc, in addition to the usual personal care products. Towels are extra large and thick, and I really appreciated the makeup mirror and the bathrobe and slippers. Guests are treated like royalty at Adia Aluma. We checked out the rooftop restaurant and pool (which was closed for the season), but it was too cool the last week in February to spend any time up there. The location of the hotel in historic downtown is fabulous. We walked three blocks to a favorite pastry shop that we had discovered during our first visit to Athens, and we walked about ten blocks to Monasteraki Square, where the view of the Acropolis is breathtaking. You're a few blocks from the hop-on hop-off bus stop, which will take you to every important site in old Athens. I wasn't even aware that Hilton had a Curio Collection until a year ago when my daughter and I booked four nights at the Hilton Curio in historic Mexico City. We were stunned then by its unique beauty and personality. And now I've experienced that same incredible difference for a second time, in Athens. I learned that Hilton has only 150 Curio Collection hotels in its portfolio worldwide. But now that I've experienced 5-star stays at two of them, I'll be on the lookout for Hilton Curio wherever we travel.
