Mansion Tarahumara is wonderful. Get rooms 211 or 212 if you can - these offer stunning views of the canyon behind the hotel grounds. The other rooms appear to be cottages on the side of the hill facing away from the canyon. The whole grounds are like wandering around Hogwarts, and the dining room is astounding. The service is wonderful, be prepared to stretch your familiarity with Spanish if you are a beginner, as I am. We visited out of season, so the pool and hot tub were not in service. No matter. The food in the main room is very good, and quite reasonable. There is a walking tour to a small village nearby at 3:30 each afternoon - the guide does a good job of stretching his knowledge of English, but if you're not conversant with Spanish you'll miss a fair bit (as I did, I'm an idiot when it comes to Spanish). Still, it's worth taking the tour. I offered $200 pesos for our tour (2 people), which was well received. Almost any room you stay in will involve some up and down hill walking. For rooms 211 and 212, a lot of stairs. A lot. The staff will help you with luggage, but you will be climbing and descending a lot of stairs (I'm an actuary, I counted 314 stairs, plus up hill pathways). Well worth it, but a noticeable effort to get to the stunning views. If you stay in a lower room, you can skirt the hill to still see stunning views over the canyon. This hotel is wonderful. The owner and the staff are extremely helpful. If you speak Spanish, it's seamless - I don't and it was still wonderful. Incidentally, there is a hotel next door that we heard charges $400 US for rooms, and $100 US + for dinners. Also on the cliff facing the canyon, you can see it from the paths around the edge of the canyon. No need to stay there, unless you're so inclined. That hotel is recognizable by outrageous orange colouring on the outside. Stay at Mansion Tarahumara instead, and have a wonderful experience.

I stayed at Hotel Mansion Tarahumara in May 2022, renting two rooms. One with a valley view and one with a canyon view. The rooms are dated, though some might say rustic. My valley view room was actually a log style cabin, the canyon view room slightly more modern. One room had lots of hot water, one only warm water. In one room the tap water ran yellow and smelled, the other was just fine. Lighting in the rooms was dim and lacking. Many bulbs were burned out. There are also not a lot of outlets for charging your phones, tablets or using a CPAP. The beds were comfortable and the place was quiet as there were few people staying there. Our check in was chaotic after we arrived from the train station on the hotel shuttle. They pick you up at the train station and will take you back too, but there is a small, per person reasonable fee. Since there are no taxis, you have no other options. Getting around in the area can be difficult, so ask lots of questions about the shuttle schedule when you arrive. Every web site says there is a restaurant there. It’s true, but it is not always open and neither is the bar. There are specific hours for each meal time. The price to eat, and drink was very reasonable and the service was great. But if you want to eat outside of their set hours, good luck. We arrived on the morning train from Creel and no breakfast was available for us after we checked in. In fact the front desk people told us to walk down the hill to another local option to eat. While it was inexpensive and wonderful, I found it odd that a hotel with its own restaurant would refuse us service. The hotel has a small store but it was not open during our stay. That means getting some bottled water, or buying that toothbrush you forgot is going to be difficult. For modern travelers, be advised reliable WiFi here is pretty non-existent. The hotel uses a mostly inconsistent satellite system. That is true not just at the hotel, but in the entire general area. And no, you can’t just use your data either, as overall cell coverage is pretty sketchy as well. The hotel, one of the oldest in the area, looks its age. And the hundreds of steps you must climb everywhere attest to it. This place is not handicapped accessible or for people with weak knees or hearts. There are steps everywhere, all at different and inconsistent heights and sizes. Remember, the altitude is above 7500 feet and depending on where your room is, you will have to climb hundreds of steps, potentially in the dark. This is especially true in the canyon view rooms. Would I stay here again? Probably not. When I vacation I want the details taken care of and this place was lacking in that regard. But… if you want to wake up to a great sunrise over the canyon at a fraction of the price of the other hotels in Divisadero, this is a good option. Just make sure you ask about the details, plan your meals, bring a flashlight and have strong legs!
