I forgot something in the room when I left and the staff mailed it to me. They really go above and beyond. I would highly recommend it. They have been very consistent over the years. It’s also ski in / ski out.

“Amazing introduction to Norway and Skiing!”

To give you some idea of how good the skiing and the accommodation is, we have rebooked here for Xmas this year and my FRENCH partner thinks the snow is better here than in the Alps. We love Geilo and enjoyed every minute of our time at the resort and the ski school. The hotel is exceptionally clean, the pool area great fun, bowling is fun too, the slops are for beginners and intermediates so perfect for a young family. We loved everything about our time, the staff, the food, the beds, the snow, the ease of the place, its perfect in every way.

I’ve now stayed at Vestlia Resort in Geilo four times, always booking the Penthouse Geilo suite for a winter family gathering — and once again it delivered an excellent all-round experience. Rating: 5/5. The location is a real advantage for a ski trip: you’re right by the lifts and slopes at Vestlia, with easy access to the train station as well. Parking is straightforward, with both outdoor spaces and a basement garage. The Penthouse Geilo suite is the star of the stay. With four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, it’s genuinely practical for a larger family. The main living area is spacious and works well as a shared hub, with a proper kitchen (including fridge and freezer). However, the kitchen was surprisingly poorly equipped for cooking proper dinners, and we ended up bringing a lot of basic kitchen items from home to make it work. What really sets it apart is the setting: terraces on three sides and a sweeping view over Geilo and the ski area — exactly as shown in my photos. Facilities are another reason we return. The large pool complex (waterslide and jacuzzi) keeps both children and adults happy, and the resort’s lodge-style feel suits a winter break. Some of us also used the spa and came back with positive feedback on the treatments. We used the bowling centre too, which is a great backup plan when the weather aren’t ideal. Check-in was completely smooth, and it was nice that reception staff spoke Norwegian throughout. Service was good, though not quite “exceptional”. Breakfast was very strong, with a wide range of hot and cold options. Even when the hotel was busy, we always found a table — although clearing tables could have been faster. Lunch was chaotic on one day due to the number of guests, with long waits. A numbered-table system would likely make it easier for staff to deliver food efficiently, especially since orders aren’t placed at the table. What could be improved • Include bathrobes for pool use at this price level, rather than charging extra. • Improve lunch logistics (e.g., numbered tables) to reduce delays when it’s busy. Value is the one hesitation: around NOK 20,000 for two nights (Sun–Tue, the cheapest winter days) is undeniably high. That said, for a multi-generational ski break where accommodation, views and family facilities all matter, it still works very well for us — and I’d happily return next year! If you go: - If you plan to use the pool, factor in the bathrobe charge (or bring your own). - Try to avoid lunch at peak times on very busy days, or be prepared for longer waits. - If you’re planning to cook in the suite, consider bringing a few essentials, as the kitchen setup may not cover everything you’d expect for dinner prep. Well situated at the bases of ski lifts on the south side of Geilo. Large dining area and lounges, which work very well for groups of skiers (and summer hikers). But you might want to avoid Norwegian holidays. Super-helpful staff. But with little knowledge about cross country trails; indeed, connecting to XC trails can be awkward and rely on taxis rather than the free and frequent shuttle buses to alpine lifts. Excellent food, with great breakfast buffet and the opportunity to make yourself own picnic lunch. Likewise very good dinner choices. The pool is excellent; the gymnasium well-equipped, and the bowling alley provides excellent fun. Improvements would be: more evident ski-classes and, for cross country, daily led-tours (with transport); and morning and after-ski yoga/pilates. The Gundersen art (Kai Fjell), furniture and drinking vessels Collections are outstanding (especially for Geilo, which is otherwise a cultural desert) and I suspect is completely undervalued by most guests. (“Casting pearls before swine). I have in previous years asked for a tour but by and large none of the staff have been able to communicate an appreciation of the Collection. So, overall: a consistently good family and group location close to alpine slopes and with a unique art collection but also possibilities for imaginative improvement.
