“A mistake in booking becomes marvao-lous experience!”

Talk about a turnaround! We booked our first pousada of the trip on booking.com for two nights, then went to book a parador across the border in Spain, but mistakenly booked another two nights at Pousada Marvao (with no cancellations allowed). We did all we could to explain our mistake, but couldn’t get it canceled or our money refunded. However, the wonderful people at the pousada (especially Margarida) worked with us and we had an amazing stay albeit longer than we had planned. It really all worked out for the best in the end! Loved our stay in this awesome location!!! The amazing room with a balcony is extraordinary! (Beware of your keystrokes on booking.com and cancellation terms. There’s apparently no room for forgiveness!) The pousada is another highlight in our trip, high up in this mountaintop village near the Spanish border. We literally stumbled into staying here during the annual Al Mossassa fest celebrating the area’s history related to its centuries under Moorish control. The pousada is comfortable, well-run and has a very good restaurant where we ate our meals at a reasonable price. Be sure to visit the castle (all these mountaintop villages have a castle!) Special kudos, again, to the staff who offer top-notch service, especially Margarida who went over and above to get us upgraded and work through our issues. The whole team and restaurant staff have been exemplary!!! Obrigada!

“Amazing view and charming town”

We had a wonderful two nights at Pousada Marvao. The town is a charming little medieval village with a castle fortress. that is well worth a visit. The hotel overlooks the valley and could not be better situated. Luie was an amazing host, able to provide a fascinating history on the town. We stayed… lisää

We had a wonderful two nights at Pousada Marvao. The town is a charming little medieval village with a castle fortress. that is well worth a visit. The hotel overlooks the valley and could not be better situated. Luie was an amazing host, able to provide a fascinating history on the town. We stayed in the balcony suite which is well worth it for its amazing view. We would love a return visit and highly recommend Pousada Marvao

“Historic inn”

The day we arrived the weather was terrible with rain and heavy fog. The staff checked us in as soon as a room was available which was fantastic and much appreciated. As we were staying four nights, they upgraded us to a bigger room which was great although we did lose an unobstructed mountain view… lisää

The day we arrived the weather was terrible with rain and heavy fog. The staff checked us in as soon as a room was available which was fantastic and much appreciated. As we were staying four nights, they upgraded us to a bigger room which was great although we did lose an unobstructed mountain view. Given the terrible weather and the fact that all the public spaces have great views, the extra space was a better deal. Note that all the unobstructed mountain view rooms seemed very small based on the hotel floorplan and only one has a balcony. Many of the rooms at the hotel have views of the street, rooftops etc. TV channels in the room are very limited here so bring a book for something to do in bad weather. There is a public lounge area that has MEO if there’s something you don’t want to miss. There are several public lounges in the hotel, all with spectacular views if the weather allows and the breakfast room also has great views. Breakfast was a good selection of hot and cold drinks, hot and cold food with selections of cereals, cheeses, meats, breads and pastries. Being an old building there are many stairs to negotiate, some of them narrow. Note that this hotel does not seem to participate in the Pestana loyalty scheme so despite being Gold members we found it cheaper to book using an online booking platform than book direct.

“Loved the location, did not like breakfast”

We stayed one night at the Pousada in Marvao. We were met at reception by George, who gave us a very warm welcome and offered to help us with our luggage. The room was lovely, with fabulous views over to the mountains in Spain. The room was bright and spacious, and the beds were very comfortable… lisää

We stayed one night at the Pousada in Marvao. We were met at reception by George, who gave us a very warm welcome and offered to help us with our luggage. The room was lovely, with fabulous views over to the mountains in Spain. The room was bright and spacious, and the beds were very comfortable. We had breakfast in the morning, and it was disappointing. The range of food offered was quite limited. The scrambled egg was far too salty, and it did not look very appealing. There could have been a bit more attention to provision of glasses for the orange juice and some other bowls etc for cereal/yoghurt. Overall, we would definitely return to stay here, but would probably avoid breakfast. There is parking close to the hotel.
