“A delightful retreat”

It was the staff which made the Quinta da Geia such a pleasant place during our stay there. Despite our lack of Portuguese and their limited English they could not do enough for us. The location is delightful with great views of the mountainous interior of the country. The hotel is very comfortable with a good restaurant and relaxing swimming pool and grounds. There is ample parking space. We greatly enjoyed our stay and hope to return. A great place for a relaxing break.

“Comfort in the hills”

We've been here a few times and Quinta da Geia is good as ever. It's in a little village at the top of a lot of hairpin bends with stunning views over the edge of Serra d'Estrella national park. We've been here a few times and Quinta da Geia is good as ever. It's in a little village at the top of a lot of hairpin bends with stunning views over the edge of Serra d'Estrella national park. The rooms are old fashioned and comfortable with modern bathrooms. The staff are just fantastic, super helpful and friendly. There's a lovely pool. The giant gin and tonics on the terrace looking out over the valley are the best ever, about 8 different gins to choose from. Food is good and tasty, but this being rurual Portugal, portions are on the hearty side. If you have a starter each you could share main courses and treat yourself to dessert. I would recommend the various pot roasts and casseroles. Profiteroles to die for. Really child-friendly, fine collection of toys available in the restaurant. (But you have to look out for your own at the pool). Breakfast is excellent. You can take an 'apartment' mostly 2-bedroom -- in which case you can be self-catering. Food shopping in the village is not great although you can get some basics. There's a supermarket by the campsite at the bottom of the hill.

“Fabulous location”

We stayed here for 5 nights and really enjoyed the stay. The owners were not there, but Emily was very attentive and worked so hard the whole time. We stayed here for 5 nights and really enjoyed the stay. The owners were not there, but Emily was very attentive and worked so hard the whole time. I imagine it must a slightly different feel when the owners are there. We had a large room with a small terrace with table and chairs and a very large bathroom, with fabulous views over the mountains and hills beyond. The bed had a very hard mattress - which I liked - the duvet and pillow were not for me though. The pillow was so soft and lumpy, the duvet was a heavy lump of manmade material, no lightness about it! I didn't sleep very well because of that. The breakfast was fine, although a bit of variety would have been nice. We asked for fresh orange juice - delicious - but the orange juice put out in a jug was just from a carton. The scrambled egg was mostly very good - one exception because it was far too salty - but it was the same every morning. No brown bread, only white and the fresh fruit was excellent with some variety. Homemade jams and delicious honey every day. The grounds and pool were very well kept. The pool is huge. I loved the location and we walked from the hotel and also drove down the valley to a new hotel with a good restaurant. I don't know how good it would be in very hot weather, as there's no a/c. The last 2 days were pretty hot and the room was only just cool enough to sleep in at night. I assume there are fans which they put out in the rooms in the summer. We ate in the restaurant 3 of the evenings we were there. Good food, fabulous views sitting outside on the terrace, or a nice atmosphere indoors. We enjoyed our stay and would consider going back.

“Not To Our Liking”

We thought we'd find an idyllic mountain getaway but after perhaps being spoilt with delightful stays elsewhere in Portugal, we were let down here. We thought we'd find an idyllic mountain getaway but after perhaps being spoilt with delightful stays elsewhere in Portugal, we were let down here. The location is picturesque, but it is not easy, needing to drive through narrow, windy, mountainous passes. That's no fault of the hotel, of course. On the hotel, the reception desk was hardly occupied when we arrived in the afternoon -- the poor cook, with little English, had to tend to our needs. The room itself was acceptable, with small bath towels and an elementary bathroom. The managers seemed to have gone to the Ryanair school of customer delight, as there were exorbitant charges just to use facilities that should be free for all guests. The sauna, spa and steam rooms attracted usage fees of €25, towels for swimming attracted a €7 rent! Towels!!!! With no prior notice on the website. Pool looked dirty, like it hadn't been cleaned that day. Nonetheless, we still swam. Probably better off swimming in the Praia Fluvial at the bottom of the mountain, 10 minutes away. We emailed 24 hours prior asking for a massage booking, but we didn't get a response and the poor cook through no English told us the massage service had to be booked and finished at 7pm. On the other hand, the João Brandão restaurant was quite good as was the breakfast. We even purchased some of their jam to take home.
