Hotel Abbaye Ecole de Soreze is in such a beautiful part of the French countryside, ideal as a getaway. The historic building was a former monastery and later military school. Listed with only 3* rooms, although there is a minimalist decor, it definitely has a more upscale feel to the hotel and it was very clean. Old meets new here, but no doubt with building restrictions due to the history of the venue, little can be changed. The gardens are beautiful, it's definitely worth exploring, with the black mountain in the distance. We found the staff extremely friendly and polite, very attentive. The restaurant was busy and service a little slow, but only to be expected once busy. If you're fascinated by history, then there is a lot to learn, including the museum adjacent. If you're looking for a 5* luxury hotel, this isn't it, but you probably won't be disappointed.

This hotel is set in the most stunning scenery, and is a fascinating building. The rooms are spartan, but full of character. Being old, however, is problematic, in that the plumbing in the rooms is pumped around. Our room, 103, the toilet pump wasn't working properly and was pumping away when we arrived (which we reported) and all through the night, so we had a really terrible night's sleep. The breakfast, at €14 per person, would have been over priced. Given our reported problem wasn't put right, breakfast was free. The swimming pool was closed, which wasn't evident when we booked. This should have been a great night in a wonderful setting, but was totally spoilt by the noisy plumbing.

“A fascinating building with extensive gardens and yet centrally situated.”

Unfortunately we were not able to take up the room booked in the main building as the hotel was having major problems with the drains! So were allocated a top floor room in less luxurious section of the complex. It was okay and was quite comfortable but the stairwell was poorly lit and was positive… lisää

Unfortunately we were not able to take up the room booked in the main building as the hotel was having major problems with the drains! So were allocated a top floor room in less luxurious section of the complex. It was okay and was quite comfortable but the stairwell was poorly lit and was positively dangerous at night. The general decor could probably be best described as "shabby chic". The staff were very pleasant and very helpful however and we did enjoy walking in the gardens and into the town itself where we had breakfast every morning as we thought the hotel charge of €16 was extortionate.
