The location of this hotel is superb! The character of the square along with the exterior of the building is full of character and charm. The location of this hotel is superb! The character of the square along with the exterior of the building is full of character and charm. I well imagine that the hotel was stunning in its day and could probably do with some investment to get it back to that glory. Having said that, it was comfy, spacious, staff were friendly and breakfast was good. I would stay again, despite its flaws.

“Low key celebration”

We had chosen this stop on our way to Öland to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. It was low key because of the covid situation. There was limited service at the hotel and no restaurant. “Very mixed bag...”

In lack of competition Eksjö stadshotell can charge almost what they want for a room. And they do. A pity, since Eksjö may not be a metropolitan city, but nevertheless gathers tourist interest due to the very special city environment consisting of mainly wooden buildings from the 19th century (and back further). Eksjö is charming indeed. And well worth a visit if you are in the "Småland" area of Sweden. The hotel is a typical "Grand" hotel from days gone by - in this case 1862. Industrialism started at that time and the railroads of Sweden began to be built. Eksjö was also a very big military center and that provided for attention. And infrastructure. Like hotels and entertainment facilities. Today Eksjö Stadshotell is a worn down history with a history... Interiors speaks of glorious days. Now gone. Sure, you can feel the spirit of the turn of the last century, but rebuilds in small portions leave you with the feeling that you are in a hotel from the 1970-ies or so... Renovations here and there - yes definitely. Lack of renovations here and there - yes most definitely. Pressure post-covid has a major impact of course. And understandable. But in any case price/performance is not up to par. Main problem for us was check in on a Sunday. Reception open until 13:00. Sms/mail is ment to be sent out to clarify how to get in to the hotel if you arrive past one o'clock. We received that sms at 19:25.... I will not go into how we got in, but can just say that it was not satisfactory. It was complicated. So, I would not say that this is a hotel in the true meaning of a hotel. It's a "traveller's room" with some major efforts requiered from the customers to even get into the lobby. Added by a concierge that had zero understanding of what he was doing... At least this is applicable on Sundays. Contradictionary info on the front door with wrong times displayed. No, no, no... After having finally reached our room it was fairly large and in a furnished style of the 70/80-ies. The bathroom was a bit newer, but with a shower curtain - when did you see a shower curtain in a hotel recently? Beds was completely modern and, worth to emphasize, VERY comfortable and of high class. So we did finally have a good nights sleep. Otherwise we were transported to a time some 40-50 years ago. Breakfast was good Must be said. And lovely staff! Must be said. Just fine assortments of most of the things you would want for breakfast. Except that the scrambled eggs was that dreary type of stuff made from egg powder. Avoid. Take the boiled eggs instead. All of this could be acceptable. If it wasn't for the price. SEK +1300 is not the right price. It should be more like under SEK 1000. The Stadshotell doesn't reach up to more than that. You don't have many options for a hotel in Eksjö other than the Stadshotell. Could be "Rasta" then just outside the city center. But you don't really want that. You want to be in the town. And there is Stadshotellet. Perfect spot! So please Eksjö Stadshotell: notch up your ambitions! And we would gladly pay the 1300 SEK. But not for now... PS The pictures provided shows how the corridors looked like (in terms of cleaning work) at nearly five o'clock in the afternoon...

“Passable, but time for an update”

We stayed at the Eksjo stadshotel when in the area during Sunday. We checked in on a Sunday at normal dinner time, and the restaurant at the hotel was closed, as it is apparently every Sunday. We stayed at the Eksjo stadshotel when in the area during Sunday. We checked in on a Sunday at normal dinner time, and the restaurant at the hotel was closed, as it is apparently every Sunday. The hotel is charming, but is very old and perhaps things have been let go a bit over the years. The room was clean and has a good view of the square. Breakfast at the hotel was standard swedish which was ok, but I can’t help but wonder how charming the hotel could be if someone pumped some money into it - it’s rates are not cheap as there is no competition in the area.

“Decent dinner, well-cooked with few offers”

Restaurant attached to hotel, but seems to be frequented also by locals. Menu is short, with classics, like burgers and salmon. Overall not very inspiring - neither food, nor wine list, but well-cooked. Staff is friendly and attentive
