“Great short break”

Just back from a midweek short break at the Angerhof. Stayed in a 2-bedroom Panorama suite which was spacious, nicely furnished and spotlessly clean, with beautiful views from the balcony over the hotel grounds, the village of St Englmar and the Danube plain in the distance. Just back from a midweek short break at the Angerhof. Stayed in a 2-bedroom Panorama suite which was spacious, nicely furnished and spotlessly clean, with beautiful views from the balcony over the hotel grounds, the village of St Englmar and the Danube plain in the distance. Lovely, friendly welcoming staff, from the proprietor down to the cleaners, most of whom spoke a reasonable amount of English (I speak German but my family don't). Delicious food: huge amount of choice at breakfast buffet; one hot main dish/soup and salads at lunch; 5-course dinner BUT you have to choose your main course from the four on offer (usually 1 fish, 2 meat and one vegetarian) in advance. Hotel claims "international cuisine", but it is in fact very Germanic and menus are all in German, so if you don't speak the language and don't have much idea of German dishes, it might be a problem. Many of the activities advertised on the hotel website are not available (e.g. climbing wall) or only very infrequently (archery 1-2 days/week, at lunchtime!), others (squash, table tennis etc.) are buried deep in the bowels of the hotel and very hard to find. The hotel doesn't promote them much either. Indoor pool very small, but clean and warm. Outdoor natural pool was filthy with slime when we arrived and most unappealing - it was cleaned the afternoon before we left. It's supposed to be solar heated, but whenever we tested it (with air temps in the mid-20s) it was freezing. Some parts of the hotel are in need of a little TLC - weed-ridden paths and patios around the outdoor spa/sunbathing area, very wobbly hand rail into the outdoor pool, broken wooden surrounds (big splinters) to outdoor pool and other rest/seating areas, broken exercise equipment in the grounds. Car hire advisable if staying for more than a couple of days.

“Colorful autumn in ,, Bayern,,”

the hotel is ideally situated at the top of the marvelous valley above the village Sankt Englmar with the ,,Kurpark,, in the lowest part of valley.... we were lucky to see Alps during bright day accross the hills of the Bayerische Wald ( Bavarian forest - local hills). the hotel is ideally situated at the top of the marvelous valley above the village Sankt Englmar with the ,,Kurpark,, in the lowest part of valley.... we were lucky to see Alps during bright day accross the hills of the Bayerische Wald ( Bavarian forest - local hills). Excelent spa with various saunas, salt in and out pool, outside bio pool, most of it in the ,,freikorperkultur,, style but the kids area with pool and relax zones is separated (for those kids who are shocked seeing naked body :) ). In the evening very good local cousine served in the multicourse menu, not too exotic, very tasteful and truly local.

The Angerhof hotel may indeed be best in its wellness section, which is beyond reproach and offes a tremendous array of facilities--from indoor/outdoor (log cabin) saunas to outdoor salt water pools and the like. On a clear day the location allows you to "see forever"--the hotel's southern exposure affords a splendid view of the valley of the Danube some 30 miles away, and perhaps even of the Alps. The hotel accommodations are (still) four star quality although slightly dated, but the excellent breakfast and dinner offerings make up for that--they are superb. Service is very good and attentive. Much less attractive is the afternoon "coffee/tea" offering with one kind of lunch-type warm meal (not always up to par) and sub-standard sweets and cakes. But there may be hope for improvement. While the location of the hotel is fine the only way to connect to the extensive forest trails (or to the skiing area of the Predigtstuhl, a good mile away) is to run the gauntlet between ugly condos (?) buiilt in the 1970s and 1980s--the sins of the past that are no longer pleasant to look at.
