“The hotel by the lake”

My first ever hotel to stay on the continental Europe! What makes this hotel so special for me is that it is attractively old-fashioned, gives off a generic European feel and its close proximity to the train station and the beautiful Starnberg lake.

Perhaps the largest hotel room we have ever stayed in! I am sure we could have got a couple of families into here and still had room to spare. So for just the two of us such a large space was rather luxurious. Despite being at the front of the hotel facing the lake we were on the second floor (or the floor above the entrance level) and we had no view of the lake, you would need to go another floor higher for lake views I suspect. The hotel may be old, but I found it to be full of charm. The staircase, the paintings, and more all added to its character. The room was quiet and we had no problems with noise. Breakfast was good and the Greek restaurant that is part of the hotel location does a very fine meal. Right across the road from the train station and a very short walk to the ferry terminal, the central location also made it easy to explore Starnberg on foot. Glad to have stayed and enjoyed this hotel. No hesitation in recommending it.

The hotel is about 150 years old and riddled with character and charm, especially the first floor, which includes a cafe, the breakfast room, and a community room. The location is perfect, right next to the lake, across the street from the S6 metro and close to everything in the town of Starnberg (which is a great town to stay in to see Munich). The rooms are adequate if not overwhelmingly comfortable. Because of the age of the hotel, the bathrooms are an addition. Ours was very small, the others traveling in our group had a slightly larger bathroom. The breakfast served each day is quite good. The biggest down side, and it's an important one, is that the hotel has no air conditioning. Which would be fine because you can open the windows and get the lake breezes at night. Except if you are on the front side of the building. There is a little park there with a fountain and a shopping center with a donner-kabob joint that is open practically all night. The result is a lot of noise from youngsters all night long, plus traffic noise. Unless I could stay at the back of the building or was staying there when it was cool enough not to need the windows open, I wouldn't stay here again. It's not the hotel's fault that the park and kabob place attract a noisy crowd, though I didn't see any effort by the hotel to manage the noise either.
