“Top notch German Golfhotel !!!”

A very relaxed, but highly efficient place! Staff was extremely friendly. Rooms were very quiet and very clean. Breakfast was wonderful. Food in the Restaurant typically German. The 'Geschnetzelte Leber' absolutely my kind of dish. We enjoyed our stay!!!!

You will visit a castle and stay over in a rooms, that give you feeling as queens and kings were living in it. Rooms are very clean. Restaurant is very good, service is just perfect. Moreover if you are a golf player then you are on a right place. From one site you are just around 40 min away from Düsseldorf, from other site it is so quite and nice there, nature is very beautiful.

Excellent large room and bathroom. Only thing missing from the room was a lockable safe. The food in the restaurant was very high standard for both evening meals and breakfasts. Excellent large room and bathroom. Only thing missing from the room was a lockable safe. The food in the restaurant was very high standard for both evening meals and breakfasts. All the staff were very nice and friendly and the hotel and room were both very clean and well decorated. A well recommended 4 star hotel to stay in near a golf course and parkland environment outside the busy city area. Good peaceful place to stay for a business trip. I would happily stay here again.

“Stay in a real Palace!”

The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was that it does not have an elevator - stairs everywhere, even to the front entrance. We didn't have problems, but this makes it impossible for people with mobility issues. Europe is not up to par anywhere when it comes to catering to the disabled. We d… lisää

The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was that it does not have an elevator - stairs everywhere, even to the front entrance. We didn't have problems, but this makes it impossible for people with mobility issues. Europe is not up to par anywhere when it comes to catering to the disabled. We did get help carrying all our luggage upstairs though. We were on a quest to visit old friends and stayed for 5 nights, using this charming, built in the 1700's Hotel as a base to make our rounds, as it is centrally located - yet very quiet out in the countryside. Some people refer to it as a "castle", but that's not really the correct translation - "Schloss" is more of a palace, once occupied by the Duke of Westerholt. His decedents actually live next door to the Hotel. The Hotel itself is surrounded by a moat - not something one can easily find any more. We loved waking up to the sound of chattering ducks. The property is surrounded by a beautiful golf course, nice walking trails, as well as a picturesque "old town" village next to it - hundreds of years old, meticulously maintained Tudor style little houses. There are several outstanding restaurants - and we ate at every one of them. As much as we liked the hotel, the food didn't come highly recommended. Our room rate included a typical German breakfast with fresh bread, cheeses, cold cuts, a variety of jams, cereal and more. They also offer to prepare fresh eggs and really good American style bacon. But after 3 failed attempts at getting fried eggs over easy we gave up, as they resembled the consistency of what we can only imagine shoe leather might be like. Scrambled eggs were ok though. Also - I recommend eating breakfast before 9am (they close at 10am), or there might not be much of anything left. We had what was probably one of the nicest suites - on a corner with views of the Duke's residence, the golf course, and the village - at an amazingly low rate for such quality accommodations. Everything was super clean and has been kept in its original style, high ceilings with lovely mouldings, but totally modernized and high end bathrooms with Villeroy & Boch sinks and in-ceiling rainbird shower. One caveat here - the floors are shiny tile and very slippery when wet! We put one of the towels on the floor inside the shower to prevent accidents - there are no grab bars. Westerholt is definitely a place where we will stay again during our next visit to that area of Germany. One point of concern I'd like to share here - and that's the choice of airports and/or train stations to get to Herten. Duesseldorf is a nice airport, and Duisburg still has a decent train station. But I'd stay away from Dortmund at all cost! What was once one of the nicest cities in North-Rhine-Westphalia with affluent residents has sadly become one of the worst, with many parts known for open drug dealing, trash everywhere, and graffiti that exceeds any place else we visited all across Germany. Our taxi driver gave us an earful when taking us from the train station to the Sixt car rental office, telling us that even when calling police to report crimes - the answer is "there is nothing we can do". For the record, I was born and raised in the town next to that area and have friends who moved to Bavaria because of all that.
