We spent two nights here and would definitely come back again! Pros: Friendly staff that go the extra mile to make you feel welcome: Everyone that we interacted with was warm and friendly. The first morning we were there, we enjoyed a complimentary breakfast of pumpkin muffins, fruit, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, sausage and tea/coffee/juice. During the second night of our stay, the Big Island was hit by a Kona Low storm that brought lots of rain and a power outage. The next morning, staff made sure we were well-fed despite the lack of power. There was juice, coffee, tea, bottled water along with freshly cut fruit and homemade sunflower bread with butter and coconut shortbread cookies. They got a fire going in the dining room fireplace and each table had a little battery-operated lamp. We felt well-cared for! Restaurant on site: The restaurant serves lunch and dinner daily; complimentary breakfast Monday-Saturday as well as a brunch on Sunday. They use locally-sourced ingredients in many of their items. My husband had the short rib risotto for dinner - the meat was fall-off-the bone tender and I had the crab cakes. Both were very good. For dessert, we shared a piece of pie that I can only describe as incredible: it had a chocolate cookie crust and mint mousse in the middle topped with a thick layer of melted chocolate. We also ate lunch there one day and split a turkey club sandwich with fries that was very good. Do yourself a favor and even if you're not staying here, go to the restaurant! Proximity to Volcano Park: You are only 1.5 miles away which makes it convenient. There is also a general store close by for any supplies that you might need, and a small restaurant (Lava Rock Cafe) that serves comfort-style cuisine. Accommodations: We were in the Kehau room which is one of two rooms on the ground floor at the back of the property. We loved the gas fireplace (it cools down at night) and the nice touches like the towel warmer bar in the bathroom and the homemade coconut shortbread cookies in the room. There aren't any tv's in the rooms, but there is a common area where you can grab a board game. No microwave in the room, but there is one in the common area. Wi-Fi is free and we always got a good signal. Because of the rainstorm, we were unable to use the hot tub and walk the trail on the property, but would have taken advantage of both. There is also a small gift shop next to the restaurant with a wonderful variety of items. CONS: The only thing that I can think of is not being able to stay longer! If our travels take us to the Big Island again, we will definitely visit this B & B.
