I stayed at Hotel Royer Urbana Champaign last month while visiting my daughter at the University of Illinois, and I am very glad I did. The hotel exudes a great vintage vibe, although everything inside appears brand new. The front desk staff helped me settle in and pointed us the EV chargers, which were a lifesaver for my Tesla.

“Hotel Royer”

This is such a beautiful hotel. The architecture and the history of this hotel just amazes me. The staff here is super welcoming and the service is incredible. I’ll definitely be back.

Parking is easy and you can walk to a few restaurants or bars (Bunny’s and the Rose Bowl) if you want to experience local culture. Easy drive to the University or downtown Champaign. Recommended.

My husband and I stayed in Hotel Royer on a busy CU football weekend. All the other hotels were offering incredibly inflated rates and we were happy to see theirs were not quite into the stratosphere. I knew this hotel from decades ago—Jumer’s, an old world hotel, and knew that it sat empty for many years. Kudos to Hilton for renovating it. To my eyes, the renovation is kind of interesting: they still have plaster walls, dark wood, and some older portrait pictures, but they offset it with navy trim, gold fixtures and light marble. I thought it was great. They have a lovely large pool (nice warm room) with a little adjacent outdoor patio that overlooks the parking lot. There’s also a little fitness room with Peloton bikes. We had breakfast in Lincoln Square mall, about 50 steps away at a cafe called Lazy Jane’s. There is a grocery store coop in the mall too, and on cold weather Saturday mornings the farmer’s market is there. There is a hotel restaurant, Writer’s Room that we didn’t try. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom and room were spotless, and it was very quiet so we got a good night’s sleep. We arrived at the hotel early in the day and asked permission to use their parking lot while we walked around until checkout, and the man at the front desk offered to let us check in a couple hours early, which I think was pretty nice. My only con was that we booked with a 3rd party site due to the inflated football weekend prices, and they gave us the smallest, darkest room (325) overlooking the roof equipment. I know that’s the chance you take when you don’t book directly. I saw other rooms and they were regular sized, and the clerk did let us in early, so I suppose it cancels out, but beware this will probably happen if you book through Hotwire. All in all, a nice hotel.
