“Superb hotel and restaurant”

What a wonderful experience staying in this hotel. Unfortunately it was only for one night as we would loved to have stayed longer. The staff accommodation and food were superb. We booked for a table at 2818 restaurant before arriving there and that was the best choice.

On arrival The Monmouth looked fabulous, the lady on reception was polite and friendly as was all of the staff in the bar and breakfast room, thank you for making us welcome. On arrival The Monmouth looked fabulous, the lady on reception was polite and friendly as was all of the staff in the bar and breakfast room, thank you for making us welcome. Our room was upstairs over the top of the reception area, we were not offered any help to get our bags upstairs, the stairs and outside balcony could do with maintenance they are very rickety. We found our room clean, but small, it needs some tender care to bring it back into shape by updating the bath and shower. Before dinner we went for a drink at the bar and sat outside in the courtyard, the tables had not been cleaned for some time and were dirty. We dined in 1881 restaurant which we found disappointing, the staff all seemed stressed, and it felt like they were short staffed. The meal was just okay, nothing like what we expected. The wine list was good, but unfortunately not well stocked as two of our choices were not available. Tables were being cleared and reset around us, and it felt like we were in the way. Not the quiet romantic setting we had hoped for! We walked the grounds before dinner. The grounds looked as though they had had no care in a long time. In summary, it is a sad and neglected property that at one time must have been absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately we feel that the accommodation and restaurant did not live up to expectations or value for money.

Very quiet location with a great view of the river. Several things however made the stay not worth more than 3 stars. First the non responsiveness from the hosts. Very quiet location with a great view of the river. Several things however made the stay not worth more than 3 stars. First the non responsiveness from the hosts. We tried twice to ask about decaf coffee. We never received a response. Upon arrival you will find steps even on the ground floor rooms. Our corner room was overpowered by a massive bed. There is no storage in the room except an armoire with a few hangers. There are no luggage racks, no drawers. Everything sits on the floor including in the bathroom. There is no breakfast on premise. It's a 10 minute drive, but the breakfast is good. A few bottles of water by the coffee machine in the hallway which was lacking, along with a few breakfast bars would have been nice. I called the number left in the room to ask about a decaf coffee, and was told there indeed is decaf. There was not. She sounded sleepy and no interest in helping me. I bought my own. Creamers consisted of one variety, french vanilla. The room was clean enough for an old home, just a bit dusty with the drapes dragging the floor. Which have to be closed at night due to outside lighting. Small refrigerator in the room was adequate but there are no extras. One small bottle of sample size shampoo. One very tiny bar of soap. Shower head leaks badly if the diverter isn't fully pulled and it's VERY hard to operate. No shower grab bars, one small towel rack. The table is rickety and if leaned on in back, it tilts until it's very unsteady. A handy man could spend a few hours and correct the issues in this room. The view, quiet location and convenience earned this Inn a 3 star.
