I stayed one night at the Hotel Don Fernando de Taos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton with fairly modest expectations as I rarely stay at Hilton properties and don’t hold any status in their loyalty program. Overall, I came away pleasantly surprised. This is a 1980s-era property that was extensively renovated about 10 years ago before becoming part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection. For the most part, the renovation was well done. The main building — lobby, bar, and restaurant — has a polished, boutique feel with attractive Southwestern design elements. My room was exceptionally large, very clean, and nicely decorated. It struck a good balance between the reliability of a chain hotel and the character of an independent property. The overall operating standard is at the Holiday Inn level, but the decor is better and with more style. I was particularly pleased with the bedding. Both the quality of the linens and the comfort of the pillows stood out and made for a very good night’s sleep. I was particularly pleased with the bedding. The hotel is spread across multiple buildings in a motel-style campus with exterior corridors and no elevators. Staircases are outdoors. This could be a real issue for some guests, especially those with mobility concerns or heavy luggage. Personally, I’m not a fan of exterior-facing room doors, as anyone can walk up to them at any hour. This setup should be more clearly disclosed on the hotel’s website and booking channels. Had I known this, I probably would have booked elsewhere. Second is housekeeping. The hotel does not provide daily housekeeping service. While this didn't impact me because I stayed just one night, it's the principle. At this price point — and under a Hilton flag — that is unacceptable. The absence of daily housekeeping feels like cost-cutting. If I wanted an Airbnb, I would have booked an Airbnb. You book a hotel expecting a hotel, not least when Tapestry Collection is supposed to be one of Hilton's more upscale brands. Like the hotel's campus-like configuration, the lack of daily housekeeping is not disclosed on the website and booking channels. Third is the bar and restaurant. Closing at 8:30 p.m. feels unusually early. The half-hour closing time is also a bit odd — why 8:30 p.m. and not 8 p.m. or 9 p.m.? Most people would expect bar service until 9 or 10 p.m. While the room was exceptionally clean overall, there was one maintenance issue in the bathroom. The shower curtain rod was extremely rusted and in need of replacement. All things considered, the Hotel Don Fernando de Taos offers attractive, well-designed rooms. That said, the campus-style layout with exterior-facing entrances, combined with limited housekeeping service, will not appeal to everyone. I would consider staying here again, but only if the price is right.

The water pressure and temperature were excellent, which made for a refreshing shower. The atmosphere was peaceful and quiet, which made for a restful night’s sleep. However, the hotel lacked a few basic amenities. There was no tea provided in the room, so if you enjoy a warm drink, be sure to bring your own microwave-safe mug and tea bags. The room also had only plastic cups for water and coffee, which felt cheap. To top it off, there was no complimentary coffee station in the lobby—something most hotels offer as a simple convenience. While in the lobby, I witnessed the front desk manager acting in what I felt was an unprofessional manner toward a guest who was voicing a concern. All in all, the stay was decent, but with a few key improvements, it could’ve been much more enjoyable.
