I just stayed two different nights this week. First, David at the front desk is a Rock Star! David was very courteous and super helpful. In fact, everyone I came across were all very nice. The rooms are updated, clean, and very spacious. The bed was comfortable. The room was very quiet. You couldn’t hear road noise or next door neighbors. I grabbed dinner one night and had the chicken Caesar and it was very good. The price was reasonable as well. Overall, no complaints. I highly recommend the Marriott if you’re looking to stay in the area

“A mixed bag experience...”

The hotel is next to University of Washington, Tacoma and very centrally located, which is why we chose it. The hotel is next to University of Washington, Tacoma and very centrally located, which is why we chose it. We were left scratching our heads though that the light rail ran right by the property, but didn't stop there. Check-in was unremarkable, until we got to our very small room. We booked a King bed with M level access and had asked about our Lifetime Gold upgrade and the front desk said, "I can't see what you booked, so I can't tell if you've already been upgraded." These were paid rooms, booked on our Marriott branded Ritz Carlton credit card. When I pulled up our emailed confirmation, it showed what we booked, which I screenshotted, and my husband went back downstairs to ask for a larger room. The woman it the front desk literally said something to the effect of "gold status doesn't really get you anything." I then screenshotted the benefits which is supposed to include "a room upgrade for the entire length of your stay." Finally the woman checked with her manager and we were given a larger room. Oy vey. I hate it when a property makes you fight for your benefits. They should be offered upon check-in. We never have this issue with Hyatt. We were told the Club M lounge served breakfast until 10:30am and I overheard a guest checking in who was told the same. The woman at the breakfast bar was clearing when we arrived at 9:55 and she told us the breakfast actually ends at 10am. A new change I'm guessing since the messaging wasn't consistent with what the front desk told us. Another example of an erosion of benefits for loyalty programs run by Marriott. The one nice thing that happened was that we did NOT opt out of housekeeping and when we complained that housekeeping hadn't come once during our 3 night stay, we were told we'd be gifted 20k points, a nice gesture. I haven't checked to see if the points were deposited. Otherwise the hotel was clean if a bit antiseptic feeling. It's a large property that I suspect is used mainly for conventions. The service in the restaurant was very good, but again there were issues. The wine list was sorely outdated and many of the wines were not available. The only sparkling for purchase was LaMarca Prosecco. No champagne as shown on the wine list and many of the reds were also unavailable. No wine key in the room or wine glasses, or slippers. Everything had to be requested.

On November 27th, we checked into the Marriott Tacoma Downtown for our second stay at this property. We arrived around 10 PM, and the front desk was assisted by a young blonde female staff member. Her attitude was noticeably cold and unwelcoming. As a Bonvoy Titanium Elite member, I requested a 4 PM late checkout, but she declined immediately without any consideration and insisted that we must check out by 11 AM. I explained that as a high-tier elite member, late checkout—if not until 4 PM, then at least until 2 PM—is usually accommodated. She told me that because I used a Suite Night Award to upgrade to a suite, the room would require more cleaning time and the hotel was fully booked. Her explanation did not make much sense. We did not argue further and were only able to secure a noon checkout. In addition, she did not acknowledge or explain any of my elite benefits such as welcome points, drink vouchers, or complimentary breakfast. She even provided only one room key. The next morning, I went to the front desk to request our breakfast vouchers and to inquire again about late checkout. Elaine immediately approved a 4 PM checkout for us. I also told her about the experience we had the night before, and she promptly informed the supervisor, Ivamia, about my concerns. Ivamia apologized and offered 5,000 points as compensation, which I have not yet received, but I truly appreciated her gesture and Despite this unpleasant encounter, I still really like Marriott Tacoma Downtown. The location is excellent, the parking garage has free EV chargers, and the upgraded suite we received this time was spacious and very comfortable. Although this stay had a negative moment, I will continue to visit this property again in the future.
