I booked our room for both its architectural character and expansive view. Both were delivered in style and grace. Simple and thoughtful the renovation of this historic building is done with comfort and beauty in mind. The colours are subtle and interesting, the materials authentic and the over all feel is deeply satisfying; nothing out of place. It is both simple and elegant. And the views out of our room over a charming terrace and off toward a magnificent overview of the harbour. If you want to stay where the owner provides exceptional service and recommendations for day trips and restraints as well as local history, this is your place. An absolutely lovely accomodation.

“Wonderful hotel full of character”

We stayed here for 4 nights on our tour of South Island and weren't disappointed. Rod was very welcoming and helpful about where to visit and eat. Thought it was a really nice touch to have early evening drinks and meet other guests. The hotel has been sensitively renovated to keep the original features and character - it had a nice feel and was very peaceful. There is a communal fridge which all guests can use which was very helpful, particularly as we were doing a combo of self catering and hotels during our holiday. Enjoyed the breakfasts, particularly the fruit salad with Black Doris plums. Our room was very comfortable with all we needed and views to die for. What a special place. Thank you Rod and Shelley for a fab stay - we enjoyed your sense of humour and banter!

“Curate's egg of a hotel.”

We stayed 2 nights, having been booked by Trailfinders in UK. Having checked out TripAdvisor and the hotel website this was a hotel in which we looked forward to staying very much. The term "boutique hotel" is much overworked generally, to the point where it means little more than smal hotel. That aside, having booked the chapel room and seen the photo on the website this hotel seemed to offer something quite special. In many ways it is special but, unfortunately, it did not quite hit the spot for us in the way it obviously has for many other guests. Our welcome from Rod was warm and professional and the advice and help he gave us to book local attractions, 2 very good restaurants and suggest the best route around the Otago peninsula are the reason for our relatively high rating. His help hugely enhanced our stay in Dunedin. The gift of a bottle of wine is a nice touch, as is the 5 pm glass of wine with other guests. The chapel room is certainly impressive, reflecting its origin and sensitive conversion. However, it is rather spartan in reality. The stained glass windows are a delightful feature but, understandably, have no blinds or curtains. The ensuite shower room is minute with no shelf space and rather spoils the overall experience. The room also lacks a fridge or phone although a ommunal fridge is made available downstairs. The overall feel of the place on entering from the car park is rather downbeat and lacking the sense of warmth evident downstairs. The continental breakfast is fine but, as other guests have commented, fairly basic: cereals, fresh fruit, jug of orange juice, a choice of sliced breads to toast and little packs of honey, preserves and butter. All OK but not special. Yes, it is on the side of a steep hill, but it is not far from the centre of Dunedin and the walk up is good exercise.

Rod, the owner, makes up for the slightly tired complexion of the hotel. It would be better without the boutique name tag, it is just a medium sized B&B. Rod, the owner, makes up for the slightly tired complexion of the hotel. It would be better without the boutique name tag, it is just a medium sized B&B. It is clean but just a little worn around the edges. The rooms are stark without any pictures, the carpet while perfectly ok, is very 70’s and I can agree with a previous review that the bedding just needs refreshing. The duvet was clean but had discoloured from white to a gentle beige with repeated laundry. Breakfast was fine, but could just do with being a little less basic. Great fruit salad and plums and a choice of breads, could do with a little more choice of cereals (maybe a nice granola). It just felt as if it was being run on a fairly tight budget with no room to refresh.
