My wife and I spent two nights at the Fable at the conclusion of our journey through New Zealand. It is a nice hotel, an historic building that has been nicely restored. Our room was compact, but aside from its size, nicely appointed and comfortable. As I recall when selecting the Fable for our stay that there weren’t many options in Dunedin, but that said, it was a very good choice by any standard. The hotel is an easy walk to numerous restaurants (there is also a restaurant on site) and the downtown shopping district. Dunedin is very spread out, so getting anywhere outside the immediate downtown, such as to the beach, or the Otago peninsula or the fabulous botanic gardens, is a drive. The staff was friendly and helpful. We would recommend the Fable to anyone visiting Dunedin and wanting to stay in a traditional hotel in a central location.

“A little disappointing, but not too bad.”

Stayed here for 2 nights on our organised and pre-planned tour of South Island. Without trying to be too critical, this hotel has been our least favourite on the trip so far. Stayed here for 2 nights on our organised and pre-planned tour of South Island. Without trying to be too critical, this hotel has been our least favourite on the trip so far. Arrived around 4pm and checked in. The welcome was OK, but not as warm as we have experienced. Asked if we could book a table for dinner after a long journey - but restaurant was fully booked. Asked about car parking - fully booked and we were told that we would have to try to find parking on the streets around the area as these had free parking overnight from 6pm until 9.am following day - no help or indication of where, just "find somewhere to park". We were on 4th floor and had quite a lot of luggage - took lift to 4th floor, only to discover that because of our room number, we then still had to go down a flight of stairs to our room. Lift goes to floors 2, 4 & 6 - but in reality there are rooms on floors 3&5 - but not labelled those numbers. Very awkward with luggage. Room was a bit cramped, but not bad - however we were a couple and there was only 1 chair in the room which meant that one of us had to sit on the bed - not the end of the world, but another little point. In fairness, the following morning we went down for breakfast - and it was superb. The eggs benedict was among the best I've ever had. I would imagine that if we'd been able to get a table for dinner, it would probably have been really good - but sadly not possible either evening. Overall, these were annoying "niggles" rather than complaints, but I would probably not opt to return here.

“Too high tech”

Nice hotel, very centrally located but quiet. My only problem with it was that, upon checkin, you are presented with a computer tablet for all the functions of the hotel - no paper instructions. There are no phones in the rooms to call the front desk or the restaurant, or anything else you might … lisää

Nice hotel, very centrally located but quiet. My only problem with it was that, upon checkin, you are presented with a computer tablet for all the functions of the hotel - no paper instructions. There are no phones in the rooms to call the front desk or the restaurant, or anything else you might need - you have to use the tablet for everything. There should be an alternative for guests who are not comfortable with everything being digital. And what if there is a power outage and they can't charge the tablets?
