“Absolutely delightful stay”

Had one night here and wish I’d had more. The most welcoming team of anywhere I’ve ever stayed. Charming, rustic setting with stunning views and open, natural lodges. Could easily have spent days around the fire or watching animals at the waterhole. Brilliant - will stay again.

Sikumi is basic but has everything you need, It is incredibly peaceful there, the food was tasty and the staff were incredibly helpful , even making us pack lunches for our journey the next Day. Sikumi Lodge on the borders of the Hwange National Park was clearly developed with love and imagination, perhaps in the early nineties, a time of hope. However, today, the wooden chalets, built among acacia and terminalia trees, clearly need a make-over. This distressed me at first, but soon the peace and serenity of the site, and the very helpful staff won me over, as did the waterhole where we saw a flock of painted dogs, another of impala, as well as a herd of elephants, almost every evening. (Note: if you are a fussy eater, it is best to discuss menus with the very accommodating manager beforehand.) Moreover, if one is of a critical mind, perhaps, one needs to place the lodge – which has so much potential and offers great value for money – into context. The road from Bulawayo to Hwange is now almost exclusively used by heavy duty vehicles carrying coal and copper. As a result sections of it are in a state of notorious disrepair. Tourists rarely travel this route. And Sikumi has suffered. But for those who cannot afford the high-end tourism that most lodges in the National Park offer, Sikumi is well worth a visit. On the one hand, it would be such a shame if it were to be allowed to deteriorate for want of investment; on the other, one does not want it renovated to a point that only a wealthy elite can enjoy its tranquility.
