Surrounded by the lush greenery of the Osa Peninsula and overlooking the serene waters of Drake Bay, the hotel provides a perfect backdrop for unwinding. Whether you're listening to the tropical birds from your balcony or enjoying the breeze, the entire stay feels like a refreshing reset in one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.

We just returned from a wonderful family trip to Costa Rica, this time staying @ Aguila de Osa with our two 30-something sons for 4 nights. It was another of these adventurous journeys we've come to expect in CR, starting from San Jose flying a small single prop airplane down to Drake Bay, viewing the Pacific Ocean on one side with windy rivers and mountains on the other. The small airstrip we landed on was cut through a small patch of jungle, started almost from waters edge, with just a very simple building where you pick up a 4x4 from here for an exciting drive on a rocky dirt road through the forest, crossing a small river (not too deep!), past the small town that has a couple small bar/restaurants and grocery store for essentials, arriving at a beach where a small boat transports you to the lodge. We were welcomed with cooling towels and refreshing drinks, our luggage whisked up to our rooms. We were immediately taken by the gorgeous landscaping, with all the exotic plants and flowers with hummingbirds in the flowers and pairs of macaws flying overhead, exquisite all-wood facilities, and views of the bay were breath-taking. The rooms were spacious, beautifully-grained wood and smooth river rock constructed, hand-carved forest scenes on each door, completely open with screening on all sides to provide maximum air flow for the fresh Pacific breezes with attractive wood shades adjustable for privacy, along with room fans as there is no AC here, which was never a problem for us. The location does entail a lot of steps for the views, yet we quickly got used to, and helped working off a bit of the amazing meals served. Which brings us to the staff, this place's best attribute - what a team the owner Bradd has assembled here, so very friendly, incredibly accommodating, & helpful in every way they can. They include a special time each night for cocktails and small d'oeuvres in a relaxing setting with cushiony chairs on the balcony overlooking the water and gardens. Dining is communal open-seating, allowing for meeting other guests, sharing stories and experiences - more places should do this as we met some really nice fellow travelers. The food for every meal was tasty, plentiful, and excellent in variety. Our waiters, including Mini (so sorry I missed saying goodbye to you mi amigo, you treated our family so specially - including preparing that mango plate for our table and accompanying smoothie was lovely!) and Alex, the cooks and others (unfortunately I do not remember all their names) were all great at what they did, all so nice - meal-times were always looked forward to! Gabriel was our fantastic guide for both the Corcovado rainforest hike, as well as the mangrove boat ride (highly recommended) - he is incredibly knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, and on so many other subjects as well. He found us a couple of tapirs, with amazing pics & video of them, along with many monkeys, birds, snakes, coatis,...his ability to spot creatures is without peer. At Aguila you also have: beaches to swim in the bay, a short walk over to another secluded beach on the ocean, trails into the woods, a nice river using their kayaks to go upstream to see wildlife and enjoy fresh water swimming (no reason for a pool!), and nightly boat ride out to view sunsets complete with frolicking dolphins. We want to thank the managers Mariana, Roland, and Cristina for their friendly and considerate help, and Bradd it was very nice to meet you & hear some of your stories. This was easily one of the top accommodations we've ever stayed at, and we travel a lot. We would certainly enjoy a return visit, places like this are rare with the combination of aesthetics, staff, activities, and meals. A unique immersion into the rainforest. The lodge is lovingly designed into the hills with caring staff and service. The guides were excellent and the rooms beautiful. Drake Bay is a beautiful location and this hotel is geared to engaging with nature. I certainly enjoyed seeing all the wildlife and amazing scenery around the area. Drake Bay is a beautiful location and this hotel is geared to engaging with nature. I certainly enjoyed seeing all the wildlife and amazing scenery around the area. However, we had not appreciated that the rooms would be so hot, noisy throughout the night and light from 5am. There is no AC (OK, environmental reasons) but there are no glass windows, only mesh which allows all the sound, heat and light in. There are some blinds over some windows but most have none. For a hotel at this price point, I don't expect to be so uncomfortable and unable to sleep. The rooms are rustic and doors don't fit properly, allowing animals to get into the room. On our first night we saw a small lizard and thought 'well OK it's the jungle' but then saw a crab crawling across the floor, a proper sized one, which we got out of the room. The maintenance man came to look around and found another one. We then had to block up the door gaps with towels for the rest of our stay. We saw other guests doing the same. There are stunning views from the restaurant and the room balconies, but I think it's important to highlight the issues with this hotel.
