Tucked in the back of Piazza Roma in the old city center of Catanzaro is a hidden gem of a hotel. It's elegant. It's quaint. It's polished and relaxed. It breathes authentic, old world charm. It was exactly what we were looking for on our honeymoon while visiting family still living in Calabria. Step back in time. The inside is like your old aunt's fine Italian home with marble floors, freshly sponge-painted walls, paintings, and beautiful appointments. You remember those aunts -- the ones with the clear plastic covers on the couch. That was this hotel, without the plastic covers. The familiar feel is In keeping with how the hosts treat you, too, like true family. How many hotels ask you the day before what you would like for breakfast, then go shopping specifically for it at the local shops that line the local streets? How many hotel receptionists are waiting for you with key in hand as you come back after a day out, greeting you as Mr. and Mrs. So&so with genuine interest? And speaking of the breakfast, we woke each day to the glorious aroma of fresh cornetti (croissants) being baked -- the smell wafting up to our room. The hotel is smaller (in a lovely way), clean, and well maintained with updated furnishings. It's the perfect place when you don't need the Jacuzzi or tread mill, but want to stand on the balcony of your room and take in Italy at its true best. Just wonderful.
