After my week stay in and around Santa Marta and Tayrona I drove over to Riohacha and by the time I got into town it was dark and late, nothing more than coincidentally I ended up in front of this hotel, I had no reservation but was greeted nicely at the front reception desk, got a room and ended up staying 2 nights just to relax and unwind. At 200 mil a night it is in my opinion expensive given this is Riohacha and the hotel is old and dated but despite this I was pleased with the good breakfast, friendly staff, good pool which I used and the location cant be beat. I have no reason to ever return to Riohacha but if I do I would actually consider staying here again so yes I could recommend this hotel.

Riohacha is an out-of-the-way town that used to turn off tourists due to its relation to drug trafficking groups in the Guajira region, despite its beautiful location. Now, things are different and it is becoming more touristy with the passing of the hours. The Hotel Arimaca has always been considered the best hotel in town, large, good restaurant, amenities, view...although new options are springing up. That said, I still prefer the Arimaca, spacious rooms with balcony, good cuisine, service. Granted, on some occassions it is understaffed, the service is not up to par, but for the most part a very recommendable visit.

This review is for two stays of one night in December. The location on Calle 1 right opposite the beach is excellent. Rooms are decent and the two I stayed in both had balconies and great views. This review is for two stays of one night in December. The location on Calle 1 right opposite the beach is excellent. Rooms are decent and the two I stayed in both had balconies and great views. Bathrooms were also a good size. The second one had hot water - the first one didn't. Breakfast is reasonable - cereal, fruit, bread, cubes of cheese and a few hot options such as eggs, arepas and chorizo. Noise may be a problem. There is a casino underneath, a road out front and bars next door. In the second room the window didn't close properly and the music from below finished at exactly 6.00 am. This probably wouldn't be such a problem if the window shut properly - but unfortunately I realised too late that it didn't! The pool is OK for a swim - but it can be a bit dirty and there are no sunbeds or chairs apart from a couple of built-in concrete benches and a metal garden bench - so not really for sunbathing. Wifi is OK in most places but a bit weak at balcony and pool. You can leave your luggage here if you are heading off on a tour of hike and coming back to the hotel. You won't get a receipt but it will be labelled with the number of the room you were staying in. I was dubious but directly on check-in for my second stay I was handed my luggage without me even asking!! Overall a good, reasonably priced option for a one or two night stay.

We stayed at the Arimaca for three nights while visiting la Guajira, I was a bit worried after reading the reviews posted on this site. However I was pleasantly surprise by the service, cleanliness and how friendly and helpful the staff was. I want to acknowledge and thank the front desk staff specially Keila Berrios, Katherine Bermudez and Hamila Moreu for their readiness to call and make inquires to place we wanted to visit, making sure our rooms where to our satisfaction, giving us tips on where to shop and good places to visit. The food served in the restaurant was very good, always hot with good plate presentation, I would like to thank Rocha, Rosevelt, Juan and Amalfi, all very professional and courteous, taking care of us while giving us our space. The hotel is located on la avenida los estudiantes across from the ocean and where all the Wauu Indians sell their beautiful mochilas and other crafts. I highly recommend you stay at the Arimaca when in Rio Acha.
